The major backlash that our society is creating for individuals that don’t fit the mold of a normal man or women. Transgender individuals are finding it extremely hard to come out to their family member about their true feelings. However, the hardship comes after they confront their family member in revealing who they really are. The whole wide world is targeting transgender for not fitting the correct mold in gender. “Housing and employment discrimination against transgender people are still legal in most places in the United States, and this discrimination was even more common in the past than it is now”(Stryker 435). Society is making it extremely hard for the world to accept transgender into our culture. There are all kinds of antics when
In certain countries such as the U.S, people discriminate against others to a certain extent based off their gender, race, and sexuality. Butler states that “to be a body is to be given over to others even as a body is “one own,” which we must claim right of autonomy” (242). Gays and Lesbians have to be exposed to the world because some of them try to hide their identity of who they truly are because they are afraid of how others are going to look at them. There are some who just let their sexuality out in the open because they feel comfortable with whom they are as human beings and they don’t feel any different than the next person. The gender or sexuality of a human being doesn’t matter because our bodies’ will never be autonomous because it is affected by others around us. This is where humans are vulnerability to violence and aggression. In countries across the globe, violence and attack are drawn towards tran...
Another sociological theory that relates to this topic is “the self” by George Herbert Mead. People form this negative idea of transgenders because of the in “the self” we take the opinions of others. For instance, even at a young age transgender children are bullied by even their own peers for acting different. These children who are bullies learn from their parents or society about what is deemed normal and what is
Culture is a behavior that consists of several critical elements, such as language, religion, race and ethnicity, clothing and politics. Culture is what one does in his/her daily life. In order to understand others, we must first keep in mind that every culture carries its own set of values and assumptions. Culture is an evolving, ever changing civilization, which includes several different groups people. For immigrants, America is a land of opportunity; for others it is just the best country in the world because of its economic success and/or its democratic political system. Americans usually value independence a lot, believe in equal opportunity, and have a direct communication style. In exploring the future American society, specifically regarding relationships among various communities of racial, ethnic, and others we are groping for an image. Some hold on to the notion of a melting pot, in which all groups would be assimilated into one homogeneous American amalgam. As I see it, the image of a mosaic, if properly understood, serves better than a melting pot.
What I find so special about Texas is how everyone is really friendly and nice, also the fact that there’s so much land in TX to improve upon it. From what I have seen Texas pride is taking pride there traditions and festivals, actives like the rodeo, barbeques and much more. One of the most amazing things about Texas that I find unique is the diversity people from all over the world come to Texas, and there's no place like it in the world. Because TX is a opened mind state it allows people to express their own thoughts, opinions, traditional values and morals. For example Houston one of is the best city in the US because there a lot of growing jobs, growing economy, culturally diversity, Great food, entertainment, also cities like Galveston
There are very few times when someone comes out as transgender and their lives are still relatively easy to manage. There are a copious number of people who oppose this lifestyle and want no one to be apart of it.... ... middle of paper ... ...
The modern education system in America is building up a nation of racist within our children. Educations promotion of cultural diversity and awareness is actually creating a segregated, inconsiderate, racist culture that prides itself on being racially and ethnically diverse. This emphasis on cultural awareness is built on the idea that the only way for America to reach true diversity is if Americans understand what makes other nations and cultures different. By definition however, cultural awareness is the understanding of the differences between oneself and the people from other countries/backgrounds focusing on the difference in attitude and values. What modern education and culture promotes in cultural awareness stays from this definition
Diversity in America has been a growing problem lately; and due to recent events, you have every right to be skeptical. Events such as the Oscars shortlist have led many people to believe that America truly does have a diversity problem. But it seems that a majority of those people don’t fully understand the opposing side. I believe that America does cherish its diversity because that is why this country is where it is today.
The paper presents a literature review of articles that concern cultural diversity in America today. The articles provide insight into some of the current problems Americans face that pertains to cultural diversity. These literature reviews stress the importance of cultural diversity in America by revealing why cultural diversity is and should be important to our society. Approaching transgender individuals with deference by, for instance, utilizing their favored pronouns, permitting them to utilize the general population lavatory assigned for their sexual orientation character, and declining to flame or expel them for transitioning, advocates attest, is straightforward human respectability. Transgender individuals are not being tricky or unseemly to transition, advocates demand, they are just attempting to introduce their actual selves to the world. Rivals of transgender rights contend that it is corrupt to take into account individuals with confounded sex personalities on the grounds that there are unmistakably two sexual orientations, male and female. The administration ought not drive bosses, landowners, organizations, and the overall population to suit transgender individuals, they demand, since many individuals may locate the "transgender way of life" irritating. Oppression individuals in light of sexual orientation personality, rivals fight, are not quite the same as separation in light of race or
Culture is a mixture of different cultures and traditions mixed together into one society. America is known for being diverse; As a country we have different types of cultures that come together as one. Cultures are passed down from generation to generation. Throughout the years Cultures can change. Although in the united states you see discrimination of cultures that does not change the fact that it is considered the “melting pot” of cultures. Cultures come together as one when traumatic events occur in America. This makes many Cultures want to come to America and have the freedom to practice any culture that they want.
Currently the citizens living in the United States are imprisoned within the binary of two genders. It is only acceptable for a person to identify as a male or a female. Depending on the gender the person identifies, as there is an expectation of how that person should look and act. The person identifying as the specific gender, must maintain the gender norms that are in place. These gender binaries are so prevalent in our lives; it is to the point where a large group of Americans are being overlooked. This group of Americans identifies as transgender, which means they do not fit society’s expectations of how a specific gender should look and behave. (gaycenter.org, 2012). The trans population does not fit the expected gender molds that are
It is evident that people who only surround themselves with others from the same cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds are only capable of assessing problems the in same way. It has nothing to do with their lack of knowledge on the issue, but rather to do with their lack of cultural diversity. Having a diverse group of peers allows for you to approach issues differently than expected. Cultural diversity has played a large role in shaping my life. I have been part of a transit family, moving over six times to four different states and then playing collegiate volleyball across the country. Through moving, I discovered diversity in each city, from the cultural norms in New York, to the southern hospitality that Arkansas offered. These experiences allowed me to have multiple interjections in my own
It’s upsetting to know that there are so many trans-phobic people out there who believe gender is natural and bash people of trans simply because they do not conform to society’s gender expectations. It’s important to realize that transgender people are no different from you and I they are humans just like the rest of society. It is also interesting to note a lot of people get uptight and uncomfortable when the topic of transgender comes up .Our society is so ignorant when it comes to the topic of sexuality and
Ask any American how they feel about multiculturalism you are likely to get one of two responses: either a cringe or a smile. Those that cringe will say something along the line of “Multiculturalism is the wrong way to look at things. It separates us by saying that everyone is different instead of saying that we are the same and unifying us.” Those that smile will talk about how great multiculturalism is because they get to see aspects of all different cultures on television and on the radio and they are free to explore all the different things that various cultures have to offer. In actuality, one cannot help but wonder if either of these responses reflects the true meaning of multiculturalism? What do these responses and others like them say about America’s attitude towards multiculturalism?
Introduction The following is a reflection on a course that has meant a lot to me. This course was a cultural diversity class that changed the perspective I saw of the different people and cultures that live in the United States. As a future psychologist, the experience of the course of cultural diversity will be of substantial help. This is because this course helped me learn important lessons about socialization between multiple nationalities.
