Cultural Competent Care India is a country with a diverse group of cultures, ethnicities, religions and languages. The Central government decided that Hindi was to be the official language of India and therefore it also has the status of official language in the states (India 2014). While doing my interview with M.P, I realized that one of the most important areas that would affect nursing care to someone from India is the language barrier. Not everyone from India speaks English and those that do may not fully understand the language to be able to make informed decisions regarding healthcare. As a nurse, in order for me to be able to give culturally competent care would be to ensure that a hospital translator is present to relay to them all the information regarding their illness, treatment and prognosis and to make sure that all their questions are answered. India is a secular state and every citizen has an equal right of choosing and following a particular religion. More than three fourth of the Indian population belongs to Hindu religion and you can find Hindu pilgrimages in every part of the country. All the religions here start the day with morning hymns. Morning prayers and moral education is also a very important part of the education system in India (India 2015). As a nurse, it is very important to understand and respect the religious preferences and practices of each patient in order to be able to give culturally competent care.
