What is a king to a god? Even if that god has committed unspeakable acts? Leda and the Swan is a poem that causes a lot controversy; some people feel that Zeus raped Leda where as others feel that she was seduced. William Butler Yeats officially published this poem in 1928. He was known as one of the world’s greatest authors of his time. Yeats was born in Sandymount, Republic of Ireland on June 13,1865 and lived to be 74 years old. He was very proud of his Irish nationality and “maintained his cultural roots, featuring Irish legends and heroes in many of his poems and plays.” ("William Butler Yeats"). He moved from Ireland to English for an extended amount of time, but later returned to Ireland after the “Easter Rising, which was an unsuccessful, six-day armed rebellion of Irish republicans against the British in Dublin.” (“William Butler Yeats”) Yeats decided to return to Ireland and live out the rest of his days with his wife. He first became a published writer in 1885 when a piece of poetry that appeared in the Dublin University Review. After being first published he spent time reviewing other books published in Ireland. In 1890 he joined a secret society known as Golden Dawn. The Golden Dawn was a group that practiced ritual magic, “the society offered instruction and initiation in a series of ten levels, the three highest of which were unattainable except by magi...” ("William Butler Yeats"). Later on in his life Yeats and his wife began taking part in something known as automatic writing, “writing produced without conscious intention as if of telepathic or spiritualistic origin.” (“Automatic Writing”). Together they produced over 4,000 pages of writing. Yeats read through all of these documents and was inspired to... ... middle of paper ... ...er than what it happening as it is read. The reader is aware of how Leda feels even though you aren’t directly hearing her thoughts; they are inferred in the description. The reader understands the writing is in 3rd person because the narrator does not directly have a role in the poem other than talking about that is going on between Leda and Zeus. We will never have an answer to if the outcome of the Trojan War was positive or negative but I believe after analyzing the poem and really looking at the words, style, images, and words I can say that I believe Zeus raped Leda. The reoccurring use of negative words really solidifies what happened between them As well as the pictures that Yeats produces throughout his poem. Swans are typically portrayed as graceful and beautiful birds, however in this poem it portrays the complete opposite of what they would symbolize.
Yeats, William Butler. The De-Anglicizing of Ireland” in Yeats’s Poetry, Drama, and Prose. ed. Pethica, James. W.W. Norton & Company, USA, 2000.
When You are Old, by William Butler Yeats, represents and elderly woman reminiscing of her younger days. A past lover whispers to her as she looks through a photo album. Basically, Yeats is showing that as the woman gets older, she is alone, but she does not have to be lonely. She will always have her memories for companionship.
Edgar Allan Poe, born January 19, 1809, was an American poet, widely known for his literature and his belonging toward Romanticism. Born in Boston, he was soon orphaned after the abandonment of his father and death of mother between 1810-1811. In 1827, Poe released his first book, “Tamerlane and Other Poems”. This was not the only one, however, for he released several other books before the death of his older brother in 1831. After his brother’s death, Poe made the decision to become a writer.

William Butler Yeats One of Ireland's finest writers, William Butler Yeats served a long apprenticeship in the arts before his genius was fully developed. He did some of his greatest work after he was fifty. Yeats was born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 13, 1865. His father was a lawyer-turned-Irish painter. In 1867 the family followed him to London and settled in Bedford Park.
William Butler Yeats is one of the many famous names to come from the original Golden Dawn. "His poetry and writings were a display of his passion for mysticism and the Occult Sciences"(www.webus.com/hogd/bioyeats.html). He received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1924. Yeats realized early on the oppression and austerity that both he and his fellow countrymen endured.
William Yeats is deliberated to be among the best bards in the 20th era. He was an Anglo-Irish protestant, the group that had control over the every life aspect of Ireland for almost the whole of the seventeenth era. Associates of this group deliberated themselves to be the English menfolk but sired in Ireland. However, Yeats was a loyal affirmer of his Irish ethnicity, and in all his deeds, he had to respect it. Even after living in America for almost fourteen years, he still had a home back in Ireland, and most of his poems maintained an Irish culture, legends and heroes. Therefore, Yeats gained a significant praise for writing some of the most exemplary poetry in modern history
The entire poem is about the Trojan War, which was fought over the most beautiful woman in the world. The wife of the Trojan King, Helen who was the most beautiful woman in the world, was kidnapped and as a result, a ten-year-long war erupts and countless lives are lost. At one point, the soldiers begin to think that there is “no shame in running” because it is “better to flee from death than feel its grip” (Homer, The Iliad XIV. 96-98). As Greek soldiers have the notion of being valiant, their cowardice in this situation amplifies the magnitude and senselessness of this war. The Trojan War was fought because of the overarching powers’ desire for the beautiful Helen. It was not fought because the soldiers had a true hatred for each other. This war was justified on the basis of a desire for the winning the woman – or more broadly explained, it was justified on the leaders’

with his lover. On the other hand, Frost’s Choose Something Like A Star speaks to the reader, advising them to choose a guiding star to follow in life. Frost uses a metaphorical star to represent a moral compass, urging the reader to choose a path that aligns with their values. In terms of literary devices, Keats uses a sonnet structure with a volta, or turn, in the final two lines to express his desire for constancy. Frost, on the other hand, uses a looser structure with irregular rhyme and meter to convey a sense of freedom and individuality.
There are many different things that can have two meanings in life. Whether it is a certain look that someone gives you, that can mean something special. Or even in a literary way, for example, in the novel series, The Chronicles of Narnia, the Lion, Aslan, symbolizes God! In the Chronicles of Narnia series, Aslan does many different acts that prove that he is symbolized as God. For example, in the most popular book of the series, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Aslan breathes the breath of life onto many creatures that brings them back to life, and turns them back to normal after the witch turns them into stone. In relation, the works of William Butler Yeats also includes many different symbols. ...years later, audiences still marvel at the works and divulge themselves in their ideas and beliefs, because although the context in which they have been written has since changed, its universal spirit has not, and that is why it will continue to remain relevant to this day and for future generations to come. This work has affected British literature by bridging the gap between the Modernist movement and traditional poetry techniques in a manner that would go on to inspire many other poets and authors throughout the nineteenth century, Modernist or not. Ultimately, the three poems “Sailing to Byzantine,” “An Irish Airman Foresees His Death,” and “The Second Coming” all hold the same themes and beliefs that many still connect with and feel even today, and with a true Irish spirit, William Butler Yeats made these works timeless examples of brilliant British literature.

William Butler Yeats originally used a formal style of writing, but he changed during the Impressionism Movement to a more metaphysical style. He was searching for a new style and a new goal for his life. Just as change was revealed through art (Monet), William Yeats changed how he wrote in his poetry. Movement and light were important in both art and poetry.
