The two phases of strategic thinking are (1) the understanding of mental functioning principle and how to produce a mental change in ourselves. The regular practice of strategic thinking which is the strategic pattern, from understanding to strategy and then from strategy to self-improvement, systematically improve our lives. Understanding and Using Strategic Thinking Our mind has three functions such as thinking, feeling, and wanting. Each of this function are interrelated and interdependent by implication. Any change in one function affect the other two in the same degree. Meaning, if I change my thinking, there will also be change in my level of feeling and desire. Key Idea #1: Thoughts, Feelings, and Desires are Interdependent The mind is composed of three functions such as thinking, feeling, and desiring. Whenever we used any one of these functions, then the other two mind function are present. These three functions keep on influencing and being influenced by each other. We can only have direct access to our thinking and we cannot change our desires or feelings immediately. Meaning, nobody can command us to feel do not feel and desire what we do not desire nor change our feelings by substituting other feelings, or desires by substituting other desires. But somebody can recommend a new way of thinking. Through rethinking our thinking, we can change the way we think. That, when our thinking changes, our feelings and desires will chance according with our thinking. A rational person is motivated to improve thinking. We think and we also think about our thinking from a critical vantage point. We need to apply universal intellectual standards to our thought. That means, we need to think in a clear, precise, accurate, relevant, logical, broad, deep, significant, and defensible ways. We can learn to check our thinking using these criteria. Strategic Idea Disciplined thinkers regularly apply intellectual standards to their thinking to assess and improve its quality. Critical thinkers focused to apply these intellectual standards as follows: • Focusing on clarity in thinking. If thinking is unclear, we cannot determine whether it is accurate or relevant. We cannot tell anything about it because we don't yet know what it is all about. • Focusing on precision in thinking. Thinking can be both clear and accurate, but not precise. • Focusing on accuracy in thinking. Thinking can be clear but not accurate. • Focusing on relevance in thinking.
