Critical Analysis of China Marine By E. B. Sledge

The book China Marine by E. B. Sledge was a biography about the life of E.B. Sledge as a Marine during his guard duty in North China. During the Pacific War, Sledge tired of waiting for his academic degree and officer’s commission. He decided to leave Georgia Tech and enlisted in the Marine to join the war. In 1944, he survived from Peleliu and Okinawa War. Those were murderous battles and he was in the front lines as an infantryman serving in a rifle company of the First Marine Division. After the strong fought with Japanese soldier, on 14 August 1945, Japanese had surrendered unconditionally and the World War II was over. Sledge and his marines’ comrades felt blessed after they heard that announcement. They thought that they would be going home after the war ended. However, they got a new command that they should go to North China to secure the region from China Communist. In this book, Sledge wanted to tell about the effect of America in China civil war and the story about the life of Sledge while he was at North China. After seven year war with Japan, China experiences an eruption of the long simmering civil war. The China civil war was the war between the China Nationalist and China Communist. “Chiang Kai-shek was the leader of Nationalist China and Mao Tse-tsung was the leader from revolutionary communist” (Sledge xix). American soldier involved in this war to support China Nationalist and defeat the China Communist. American wanted secure North China from the communist party. Moreover, American also wanted to secure the region from Japanese. In fact, civilian were welcoming American came to their country and they had a perception that American soldiers were the hero. For Sledge, the Soong’s family was the finest, most refined people he has ever known, who gifted him a mixed feeling of friendship and family affection. The story about E. B. Sledge as a US Marine during his duty in North China is the evidence that Americans have a big effect on the China civil war. Americans lost many soldiers while support China Nationalist to control the whole North China. At the last, China Communist successful captured Peiping and China Communist lost the war. The life of the US Marines during back then was really hard and they sacrifice their life for another country’s liberty. To summarize, the story of E.B.
