In Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut tries to make sense of a seemingly meaningless world by creating a novel whose narrative is more a conjunction of events instead of a linear story. Vonnegut beings his novel with a confession about why he wrote this book, he starts, “all this happened more or less” (Vonnegut 1). As a reader it is alarms are signaled when the author themselves makes an omission about the reality of the tale about to be told. He spends the first chapter giving an autobiographical view into what shaped his life and how this book needed to be written. Vonnegut says he thought he would have a lot to say about the bombing in Dresden that “all [he] would have to do would be to report what [he] had seen” (2). But instead “not many words about Dresden came from [his] mind then—not enough of them to make a book, anyway” (2). So here Vonnegut makes it clear this novel is not explicitly an anti-war book but rather an attempt at making sense of how life …show more content…
The use of the verb “act” gives an impression that Billy does not feel fully connected to his world. An actor by definition behaves in a way that is not genuine and pretend to be someone they normally aren’t and here Vonnegut is saying that Billy has to act when he is thrown into any moment of his life. It could be suggested that Billy has PTSD and his time traveling might just be him blanking out, but it doesn’t erase the fact that he still have to ‘act’ a certain way for fear of being considered strange. Perhaps this is a way of saying that life becomes this difficult role to play when nothing makes sense and Billy no longer feels like the person he was meant to be so instead of making those around him aware of a change he acclimates and avoids the discussion. The focal point of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five is the devastating fire-bombing of Dresden in World War II, an event which was experienced by the real-life Vonnegut as well as the fictional Billy Pilgrim. Through the novel, Vonnegut renders his account of an occurrence which is, in itself, indescribable. In order to tell this story to the world, Vonnegut uses Billy Pilgrim's Tralfamadorian experience as a window that allows the reader some relief from the horrors of war. According to the author, the war was a traumatic experience which is virtually impossible to describe. As Vonnegut says in the introduction, " . . .I thought, too, that it [the novel] would be a masterpiece or at least make me a lot of money, since the subject was so big . . .but not many words about Dresden came from my mind then"(Vonnegut 2).
Edelstein has noticed that Vonnegut ties all of those instances of time travel together with Billy’s need to escape his harsh realities, but that escape can only last so long. Vonnegut would not have been able to convey this mental process of escape that Billy struggles with had he not employed the telegraphic style used in Slaughterhouse Five. Conclusion Although Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse-Five about World War II and the Dresden bombings, he never attempts to explain or reason why any of it had ever happened. He instead chooses to highlight the aspects of warfare that assimilate humans into apathetic machines.

One can only imagine the intense emotional scarring that one would suffer after exiting an underground shelter with a dozen other men to find a city destroyed and its people dead, corpses laying all around. He has a good job and a family, while in reality he has no connection with his kids, and most of the time cannot express what is on his mind. Slaughterhouse Five is a book that should be carefully analyzed and be seen as an inspiration to further improve the well-being of mankind. Vonnegut makes it clear that an easy way to improve mankind is to see war not as a place where legends are born, but rather, an event to be avoided. Intelligent readers and critics alike should recognize Vonnegut’s work and see to it that they make an effort to understand the complexities behind the human condition that lead us to war.
Both his time travels and the aliens’ view of time are related because they define time as a collection of moments. If time is a collection of moments, his life appears less upsetting because he can cherish the happy memories and simply accept the difficult ones as a mere moment in time. He had lost his ability of choice of what he could do. He was a train and the tracks were his life, he had no say in where he would go or what would happen. Being able to foresee all of his life events, Billy would no longer be able to experience anymore extreme emotions of sadness, despair, and happiness. In conclusion, Slaughterhouse-Five is an anti-war novel because Vonnegut, the character, says it is in the first chapter, the terrible damage it left on Billy, and how it exposes war's horrifying practices. Knowing these elements, one might wonder why people still have wars. Although these anti-war novels cannot completely stop wars, they are important. The role that such novels play is one of raising awareness of war's actions and wrongdoings. Since the role of the novels is important, authors should continue to write them to keep people informed and educated about a problem of such a huge magnitude.

Dresden’s destruction shows the destruction of people who fought in the war: the all the people who died. Some people, like the main character, Billy Pilgrim, are not able to function normally like before because of what they saw, because of their experience. Throughout the book, Billy starts hallucinating about his experiences with the Tralfamadorians: he wants to escape the world which was destroyed by war, a war that he does not and cannot understand. Vonnegut uses the technique of repetition.. The main repetition is “so it goes” which is told after anything related to death, he also uses other repetitions throughout the book.
