In the essay, “Isolated by the Internet” by Clifford Stoll, we read about the negative social impacts the Internet has on an individual. He supports his claim that “Internet use can have serious negative long-term social effects” with studies by two psychologists. They have come to realize that the social ties between people on the internet is not nearly as strong as the ties they develop in person. Face to face interaction is more effective than screen to screen interaction. The ties that people develop amongst others can also be dangerous. For example, some interaction on the internet can be lead to destructive situations; such as catfishing, cyber bulling, and credit card fraud. I felt the depression that Stoll expresses in his essay because I have experienced people using the internet in a negative way. I have been a victim of cyber bulling. I was bullied at a young age; an age where being social was a prime source in my life. The girl who bullied me on the internet could not and would not confront me in person about the way she felt about me. Unfortunately, she took to the Internet to communicate and distance herself from speaking to me in person. I have come to learn that arguing over the internet is not as near as effective as discussing personal situations in person. The girl was calling me names and threating me, but what could I do about it? I was stuck behind a screen reading these negative comments and she got the pleasure of knowing that I read what she was saying and that it would be implanted in my brain for me to carry as I went on with my life. As Stoll said, the internet can have a negative impact on people’s lives through the ties they make with each other, but can very much be a dangerous place for people to be involved in. Due to effortless accessibility and compatibility, the internet has become easily addicted to. Being addicted to online games, online shopping, or social media websites develops dopamine in our brain that brings a sense of rush whenever we login to our game rooms or media accounts. This type of addiction can be very destructive in our lives. For example, getting onto social media websites can be detrimental to young people’s lives by effecting there education. There are many youth today that will check there social media accounts before or instead of starting their homework. Also people stuck in a cubicle having to write daily blogs online can gain carpool tunnel from over typing. Being addicted to the internet can harm our health in more ways than one. With using the internet extensively, “these addicts routinely experience apathy, depression, anxiety, restlessness, fatigue, arability, and clouded thinking.” Relating back to Stoll’s claim that the internet is a negative social development, we can see that being addicted to the sociality of the internet use can be detrimental to our lives.
