Criminology is a branch of sociology as people in this field study the motives, impacts and aspects of crime. They study many different things such as; the frequency of crimes, location of crimes, causes of crimes, types of crimes, social and individual consequences of crimes, social reactions to crime, how individuals react to crime, and how the government reacts to crime. Their main goal is to limit crime to as little as possible by focusing on the psychological standpoint of it all. In many cases, criminologists go into one of three fields; forensic psychology (study of psychology and the law), environmental criminology (literal study of crime and how location plays into it), and criminalistics (study of crime detection). Each are important and study the different angles of crime and why it happens.

One of the main ones being analyzing data and collecting it, and most of their time will be spent in a lab or office. Work will be done in a group and alone depending on the day. Most of the time however, criminologists work in small groups. An average day for a criminologist varies and one day they can work in a lab and the next they can be at a crime scene. In many cases, one day won’t look like the next. Each day there are certain tools a criminologist uses. Most of which consists of the same tools crime scene investigators use because it is a subfield of criminology. Computers are very important to criminologists work and help them to organize statistics and data that they come up with. In terms of salary, the median salary in 2015 was $73,760 for all sociologists. However for just criminologists, the mean salary was anywhere from $20,880 to $44,000 a year for people just starting out. Experience can go a long way and people with 5 to 19 years of experience earn from $30,000 to $75,000 a year, not too bad. They also get benefits such as health insurance and personal
