Creativity is greatly influenced by how acceptable and desirable it is seen by individuals who otherwise may settle for different priorities. Many educational facilities extend students concerns toward certainly important subjects such as math, english, language and social studies. Unfortunately, subjects that assist both individuality and creativity such as music or fine arts courses are often not given the attention they deserve. Readily available, but rarely taken seriously when compared to other subjects or extra curricular activities, fine arts becomes a less important study. Children are typically put down when they want to be a musician, actor, artist, etc. they are pushed into careers that will ‘further society’s progress’. “...academic ability, which has really come to dominate our view of intelligence...the whole system of public education around the world is a protracted process of university entrance...the consequence is that many highly-talented, brilliant, creative people think they're not...[due] to the thing they were good at school wasn't valued…” (TED). Student are pushed from their passions and encouraged to attend universities to help industrialize the world. Although industrialization is inherently important, an individual's possible success in other fields are influenced negatively during early academic years. When locked into a state of standardization many students can not succeed and that is when education will fail and get dispirited due to bad grades. “They’re quitting because they’re discouraged and bored...creative people, for the most part, exhibit active moods and positive affect. They’re not particularly happy...But they’re engaged, motivated, and open to the world…”(Bronson). Many students stop paying attention in class, they day dream, draw or write stories; they get disciplined when they don’t pay attention in a classroom setting or if they are too fidgety. This is due to the lack of personalization
Because the education system does not relate classwork or homework to the lives of students, they do not see how writing essays or solving math problems can help them in everyday life. “By the time Roadville children reach high school they write off school as having nothing to do with what they want in life, and they fear that school success will threaten their social relations with people whose company they value. This is a familiar refrain for working class children” (Attitude 119). As students begin to realize how low their potential is within school, they chose to cut school out of their life and start working. These students do not understand how they can benefit from what they are learning. “One woman talks of the importance of a ‘fitting education’ for her three children so they can ‘do better’, but looks on equanimity as her sixteen-year-old son quits school, goes to work in a garage, and plans to marry his fifteen-year-old girlfriend ‘soon’” (Attitude 118). Students are settling for less than what they can actually achieve to have, just because they see no purpose of being in school, and believe they can do better without the help of the education system. Even parents are not actually supporting and encouraging their child to stay in school. “Although Roadville parents talk about the value of school, they often act as if they don’t believe it”
All students, and children especially, have tremendous talents, which are forgotten when their minds walk through the school door. Their forever developing talents and favorite interests are left for an uncreative school environment. I, for one, have always been taught and believed in an education, or following the guidelines of another, was essential in achieving wealth and success later in life. However, after listening to Robinson’s argumentative speech, I realize creativity and a valued education coincide with each other. To justify myself, creativity and thinking outside the box has led to many of the world’s advancements. Therefore, when teaching future leaders, and future generations of employees and employers, teaching creativity in a forever rapidly changing and unpredictable world would have benefits. At last, I believe that the educational system puts too much emphasis on a substantial, everyday American future over one’s happiness in a later life. As Gatto so eloquently points out in his article, “We have been taught (that is, schooled) in this country to think of ‘success’ as synonymous with, or at least dependent on ‘schooling’…” (Gatto 150). If he is correct, and success is reliant on our schooling, only the few elite students even have a chance at becoming successful. And that is truly unfair because every student in our country’s education system deserves the chance to be able to become something great.
The creative class is an emerging socioeconomic class in the United States. Richard Florida, a well-decorated Professor, defined this new class of Americans. Richard Florida focused on social and economic theories, which has developed a popular reputation in many cities today where the creative class has been adopted. This new class of Americans emerged after Richard Florida debuted his book The Rise of the Creative Class: And How it’s Transforming Work, Leisure, Community and Everyday Life in 2002. After 2002 postindustrial cities began to move to more economic development.
There is no doubt that conformity is essential to the harmony of society. It allows for individuals to work together under a uniform set of rules and norms. In childhood and adolescence, the time during which students go to school, children begin to learn these basic rules of civilization. They socialize with others, learn respect and become well-rounded individuals. This requires students to not only develop their talents but also their weaknesses. Much too often in America today, modern music and art programs in schools are perceived to many as extracurricular activities rather than important subjects that are vital to a students learning and skill development. The truth of the matter is that encouraging music and art education in public schools has a much larger impact on student’s grades, academic performance, and the economy than the majority people realize. Within the next year city school budgets will be dropping by twenty five percent, and despite the fact that music and art programs have been showing a dramatic contribution to student’s learning, this substantial drop in funding for the programs will lead to no dedicated money for art or music programs (Mezzacappa). There is no doubt that a cut in funding for art programs will take a huge toll on students overall grades and test scores. Research has found that the studying of music and art facilitates learning in other subjects and enhances children’s skills in other areas (Brown). Furthermore, providing students with a creative outlet can do great justice in reducing the stress from many other classes and even offer insight for students in possible career paths involving the art field. The art industry today currently supports 4.1 million full-time jobs (Dorfman). By increasing the funding of music and art programs for students preschool through twelfth grade we can see a dramatic increase in the education of children across the United States, assist with skill development in young students, and greatly benefit the economy at the same time.
Just because one isn't studious enough like his fellow peers doesn't mean we should just let them dwell in misery but instead we should encourage them to try harder and if someone has interests other then studies like in music, arts or sports, Teachers should act like their mentors and push them in that direction. If we keep on underrating others it will mentally disturb them, and they will always be submissive, never will you see these peoples thinking about themselves in a good way. The purpose of this proposal is to outline how the student’s education can be made to be more versatile. Here at Grafton High School, there is little priority placed on the art departments. It is largely understaffed, underfunded, and under emphasised as a valuable academic venture. For the students, an improved arts program could make a more well-rounded education to better prepare them for secondary education and/or the real world. Encouraging student participation in arts credits and extracurricular activities, leads to a more enriched community.
Jane Alexander, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), once said, “Many children are missing out on something which gives their education context, gives their lives depth and meaning, and prepares them to be the future workforce.” This “something” that she spoke of is music and art education. Unfortunately, she is entirely correct. We are currently seeing in our country a dramatic cut in arts education curriculum in our public schools due to the limited amount of both time and funding. In many cases budget cutbacks mean arts education cutbacks. This limited amount of resources often forces administrators to place a value on the various subject areas. There is always a demand for greater concentration upon the traditional basics: English, math, science, and history. There is also a new focus on computer competency and a renewed focus on the need for foreign language education. Add to this health education, family life education, industrial arts education, AIDS education, home economics, physical education, and business education and one begins to wonder where arts education fits in.
Imagine a world a bland world, along with its individuals all the selfsame. In result of the reprehension of creative courses in academia that world that was previously mentioned would soon become an actuality. When budgets cuts were accruing in my school district, Union New Jersey I remembered my art, music, and other teachers who taught what was considered electives at that time were petrified that not only their department would cease to exist but they would no longer acquire an occupation. There is constant reminder of how paramount the sciences and mathematics are and I am not saying they do not hold great purpose which they do; but the fine arts such as music, ceramics and overall the courses that allow creative freedom is important as
The arts are everywhere in our lives and have always been an important part of human daily experiences. The arts also are an enormous economic force in our world from fashion to design to the entertainment business; all are multibillion-dollar industries. Numerous studies have shown a positive correlation between a balanced and comprehensive education in the arts and high student standardized tests. A comprehensive arts education program helps students develop self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperative skills and self-motivation, all of which are necessary to be successful in life. (Arts Education Partnership, 2006) A comprehensive elementary arts education program should consist of all 4 elements: dance, music, theatre and visual arts.
Art can be used to raise scores in every subject, “Students who took four years of art classes scored 91 points higher on their SAT exams than those who took half a year or less. Multiple studies also confirmed that there is a correlation between art engagement and students’ other achievements.” (Valeriya Metla) Even with the research linking art and better grades some educators think that it is more worth while to only focus on the core classes because it is more important to fund what is being tested than to help raise children who are creative.
According to Google, creativity is defined as “the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work.” In his TED Talk, which is one of “the most popular talks of all time”, Sir Ken Robinson discusses how public education systems degrade creativity as an essential component within the academic growth of all students. Robinson is a creativity expert and an author who writes books about creativity in school systems. His expertise in the field of school systems and creativity justifies his opinion on the subject. Robinson concentrates on the significance of creativity by creating a variety of strong arguments. His main contention is that “creativity now is as important in education as literacy” (Robinson).
Creativity, it’s a broad topic of just new things and ideas among people. The definition of creativity is the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work. PBS describes creativity as, “The new ideas and new connections between ideas, and ways to solve problems in any field or realm of our lives. The concept of creativity is often hard to grasp because creativity isn 't a tangible thing its just and idea. Also, because it’s hard to differ between a truly original idea and an idea that is just shaped from others. With all this being said, it can be hard to figure out where creativity comes from.
Since we are born we have imagination and as we grow up this imagination may increase or decrease. Creativity strongly relies in our imagination. Depending on different circumstances people learn to express their creativity openly while other people close themselves and believe they do not have creativity. Creativity is a natural talent that every single human has. Creativity can be used to solve a complex problem in a different manner or just to find innovative ways to have fun. Creativity is thinking out of the box. Even though creativity cannot be taught from scratch there should be a class that is specific for creativity.
