Friends Made Out of Bullying I woke up to the sound of an extremely annoying BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP, and I felt like a hibernating bear. It was like the darn alarm wanted me to get a knew one. Three million bullying incidents are reported each year in the U.S. and over 160,000 kids skip school each day because they are scared of being bullied (Havenrich). Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year olds and sixth leading cause of death for 5 to 14 year olds ("Bullying"). Bullying has been going on for decades (Garby), and goes unnoticed by many everyday. One out of every four school students encounters taunting, teasing, shoving, and called names daily by school bullies (Havenrich). Bullying happens on the playground, during class, and to and from school (Wright). Bullying has become a big issue and some states are making laws to stop bullying (Garby). It damages the people being bullied, effects the bully himself, and sometimes the people that did not take part in the bullying.
It only takes one bad experience to change your opinion on something. Imagine if you went through this same bad experience for months, or better yet years. Your whole personality, how you view yourself, and others changes drastically. This is what it feels like to be bullied. Bullying is a serious issue in America, especially among children and young adults. From kindergarten all the way up until my sophomore year of high school, I was a victim of bullying. Being bullied changed how I viewed myself and others, what my values and morals were, and it shaped me into the person I am today.
It was finally the first day of school; I was excited yet nervous. I hoped I would be able to make new friends. The first time I saw the schools name I thought it was the strangest name I’ve ever heard or read, therefore I found it hard to pronounce it in the beginning. It was the bus driver, telling me it was the last stop. I looked around nervously, no-one was there and everybody had left. I slowly made my way to the front of the bus, staggering across the aisle. As I stepped off, the door creaked then slammed behind me. The engine spluttered and the tyres screeched as the bus made its quick getaway leaving me helpless in the middle of nowhere.

Bullying has become a highlighted problem within our society, and bullying in the school systems is even more prominent. According to the news, there are countless cases of bullying, many of which do not have happy endings. The rates of suicide due to bullying are currently higher than they have ever been before. Suicide is the third top causes of death in young people within the United States, averaging at 4,400 deaths a year, with over 50% of these deaths as a result of some sort of bullying. Studies also show that there are 100 suicide attempts for every one successful suicide performed (“Bullying and Suicide”). These numbers are disturbingly high. Bullying is affecting more kids in ways that some adults may never understand. The fact that words and actions can lead to cutting and suicides is still a distant concept to some and needs to be brought to immediate attention. Laws are now being put into place to prevent these tragedies, but what is really being done to prevent them within the schools or even within the students’ homes? There is a lot of finger pointing when it comes to this topic. But we all want to know what the cause is behind this nationwide crisis and who is responsible for it.
The article, “Bullies and Their Victims”, by Berk (2010) gives an analysis of how bullies and their victims develop, what makes them persistent and how they and their victims can be assisted. Bullying is an activity that thrives mostly in a school setting because of peers and the various cultures and diversities among them. Interactions are inevitable among children, but bullying is destructive because it aims at peer victimisation. Both boys and girls have the ability to become bullies but the majority of them are boys who use physical and verbal attacks on their victims. In the more recent generations, the means of bullying is amplified in the adolescent stage by using electronic means like cyber bullying. Students will rarely like bullies but if they do, it is because of their leadership abilities or influential personalities. Their peers may join or stand by to watch as the victims are bullied.
A world without oppression would be a world of abundant happiness. However, individuals have a certain way of asserting their aggressive need for authority upon others. In doing this, they are also preventing the joys of others, as well as the cheerfulness of the world. This act of oppression is considered bullying; bullying is any way of causing someone to view themself as less than what they are, or what they could be. Surely, any human being will put their personal needs as a priority to those of others’, but it is immoral to knowingly cause another person to condescend upon themselves or their peers. Anyone has the potential to be subjected to bullying. They may just as easily become a bully for that matter, though the most prominent ages of bullies are those still in grade school. This is the result of the immaturity of children added to the freedom of interaction they are given. It is very difficult to obtain a quality education that we will inevitably need if there are obstacles such as harassment and inequality in the way. In the article, An End to Bullying, the author says, “Bullying is, at its core, a human rights violation. It is the abuse of the powerless at the hands of the powerful, and it is a threat against the right to receive an education free from persecution” (Kennedy). Bullying is a disastrous habit to acquire, and we need our younger generation of children to understand its harm, and eliminate it.
