The brutal war had just begun. The fog was heavy, the distance we were able to see was less than 30 yards from our position. My men and I separated, The fog became misty and darkness began falling rapidly. I thought I had walked more than far enough to be able contact the soldiers on the right and left side of the field. We had started setting up a huge barbed wire in front of our defensive position. In our trench I could see filthy, weak men with sacks twice the size of them on their backs. The sacks were filled with heavy ammunition and aid for the badly injured soldiers. An aircraft appeared in the night sky. Bombs were being dropped on the Germans side of the battlefield.
