FIFA is an association that is in charge of professional soccer throughout the entire world. FIFA stands for Federation of International Football Association. They are in charge of many tournaments, such as the World Cup, Champion’s Cup, and the Confederations Cup, three of the most watched events in the world. In the past ten years FIFA has had many events occur that makes the association look very bad. FIFA has taken illegal bribes and have had many executives arrested recently for gambling and laundering money. Many people think FIFA is not a legit association from those events. There have been riots across the world involving the scandal. People would get in an argument about FIFA’s issues and it would lead to fights and they would expand to riots. The corruption has also lead to match fixing, but officials do not have enough evidence to prove it, yet (Americas Quarterly). Businesses have cancelled partnership with FIFA (ABC), which means FIFA is losing money from their own mistakes. Many other companies have also threatened to cut ties with FIFA if they still have a poor public image. Most soccer players in FIFA continue to play soccer, putting the FIFA problems away, but some players have threatened to go on strike because they want to play in a “trusting league” (Western Daily Press). In July FIFA had a new president election for their multibillion dollar business. No one went up against Sepp Blatter, so he was automatically re elected. But FIFA has been trying to elect a new president. Suspending Blatter was a good step and their are rumors that they will have a new election by the end of 2016 (The Guardian). If a new president is elected, then FIFA would drastically change. No one would know for sure what would change because a new president hasn’t been elected yet. But the 2022 World Cup from Qatar would likely change. Qatar was one of the cities to pay the executives to vote for them. In Qatar there has been many controversial things happening there involving the World Cup. Qatar has workers build the stadiums in terrible conditions. Workers are often dehydrated from the extreme heat and are being paid around one American dollar per hour and they work very long hours. On average about two workers per day die working. They die from dehydration, overworked, falling from high points, or debris falling on them.
