In the play Coriolanus, the man by with the play is named is a complicated individual. There is complexity to his personality, and subtlety to his emotions. In Act III, from III.ii.91 to 139, Coriolanus goes through an extreme shift of point of view and emotion. He has a complete reversal from not wanting compromise with the common people citizens to begrudgingly accepting that he must. For any actor trying to play Coriolanus, the importance of understanding this scene is important to understanding Coriolanus as a whole. Prior to the events of Act III, from III.ii.91-139, Brutus and Sicinius have attacked Coriolanus' character. Their words anger him, and he lashes out, as they expected him to. Coriolanus insults the common people, stating that they have become spoiled and lazy with the freedoms that the nobles have given them. The people receive food even though they do nothing to contribute to the safety of the city. This angers them, which leads to the events of scene two.
