Controlling the Mind The ability to hold two contradictory ideas at once and accept both of them is known in the novel 1984 by George Orwell as “doublethink.” It is more than just reality control, for it must be preformed constantly and immediately to ensure that all thoughts are orthodox. Doublethink is not forced upon the citizens of 1984, yet it has become an action of everyday life, much like breathing and eating. It is essential to the stability of the Party and all of Oceania because without it, the morale of the people would plummet. In addition, doublethink prevents the true reality of humanity from being understood, which allows the Party to maintain control over all aspects of life. The ability of the word doublethink to portray how the Party keeps the citizens of Oceania under its control makes it the most important word in the novel. Without “doublethink,” morale in Oceania would be quickly depleted. An example of this is when the chocolate ration is lowered because of war. However, instead of announcing this flaw to the people, the Party announces that the chocolate ration has actually been raised. Winston then correctly notices: “It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.” (Orwell 58-59) This is a prime example of doublethink for any person of stable mentality would notice the discrepancy between the announcement and facts but the citizens of Oceania not only swallow this lie, but also forget about the past ration. Only a great society could perform such a feat as to have complete control over the minds of all who inhabit its territory. In this sense, doublethink and the Party are permanently intertwined in a symbiotic relationship, for neither could survive without the other. Since none of the actions of the Party would be possible without doublethink, the existence of the Party would not be possible, preventing its members from achieving their final goal of absolute power. Likewise, doublethink could only be implemented by a strong and ingenious government, similar to that of the Party. Therefore, doublethink is the most important word in the novel because it provides humans with the ability to create and maintain a negative utopia.
In 1984, people 's thinking are controlled by lies, invented stories and false information. The stories of the past are all altered and the information is constantly changing every day without leaving any sign of change. The party uses propaganda as a deadly weapon to control its citizen’s mind. One type of the propaganda which is common in 1984 is called “doublethink”. As the book describes it as, “the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.” (270). Propaganda ensures people of their society and makes them to think that they have a better life in contrast to other zones. One of the famous propaganda used are the three slogans, “WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.” (4). This is an example of glittering generalities technique where an emotionally appealing phrase with powerful words is use to evoke emotions. As an example, the song “doublespeak” from Thrice that also deals with the concept of doublethink, describes a genocidal society where killing innocent people who are rebelling for their rights is common and in order for them to remain sane, they would rather hold their silence. The strongest part of the song is where it says, “I keep my toes on the party line/There is nothing wrong dear, don’t think twice”. It is trying to say that no one considers rebellion since the Party is already governing in the best
In the struggle of mind over matter, an individual needs to have courage to use the knowledge that he or she possess. By using the knowledge available to us, we as individuals have the ability to overcome opposing forces in our lives which seem to keep us from progressing (mentally and emotionally), and which can seem larger than life. In Homer's epic The Odyssey, The use of cunning to disguise and deceive and to ultimately overcome the godlike opposition that manifests itself many times throughout the book, and makes Odysseus' return home possible. Without the ability to deceive, Odysseus' brute strength alone would have exhibited a futile display of power in the presence of the gods of Ancient Greece. Much like the lives of individuals, if we do not use our cunning and wit in a most effective manner, and rely on strength instead knowledge, we are destined for a life of failure and/or mediocracy . If Odysseus hadn't had the courage and cunning to return home his destiny would have consisted of spending the rest of his life on an island with Calypso, miserable.
In the novel 1984, George Orwell describes a dystopian society called Oceania. It is one of the three super states in the world and is controlled by an imaginary leader, Big Brother. This society is lead by a totalitarian Party that controls the society by enforcing their slogan onto their people: War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery and Ignorance is Strength. These slogans are encrypted into everyone’s brain as a way to manipulate them and make them believe they live in a fair, just society. In 1984’s Oceania, the slogan “ignorance is strength” plays a massive role in the Party’s manipulation of the society.
Just changing a few small items in history can alter human belief. By constantly feeding the people fraudulent information and hiding the truth, the Party can get the people to believe almost anything; eventually leading to complete dominance over the mind. Orwell argues that society is completely oblivious to the constraints that are involved in everyday life. There is no individual in society and everyone remains the same. “Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?”
1984 is about a parallel world 35 years into the future, in which all nations have been combined into three major countries: Oceania, Eastasia, and Eurasia. London still exists, but it is now a part of Oceania, governed by an entity called the Party, headed by a dominant figure called “Big Brother”. The Party's one goal is power; power over everybody and everything in Oceania. There is constant surveillance; devices called telescreens are put in people's homes to monitor thoughts, actions and broadcast Party propaganda continuously, with no way for the person to turn it off or change the channel. Free thinkers are not tolerated, and the "Thought Police" are sent to capture the culprits. The Party is developing an official language called “Newspeak,” whose goal is to simplify language by eliminating as many "extra" words as possible and reducing vocabulary to a small number of basic words, thus narrowing the range of thought.
“The first thing you must realize is that power is collective. The individual only has power in so far as he ceases to be an individual. You know the Party slogan: "Freedom is Slavery". Has it ever occurred to you that it is reversible? Slavery is freedom. Alone—free—the human being is always defeated. It must be so, because every human being is doomed to die, which is the greatest of all failures. But if he can make complete, utter submission, if he can escape from his identity, if he can merge himself in the Party so that he IS the Party, then he is all-powerful and immortal. The second thing for you to realize is that power is power over human beings. Over the body—but, above all, over the mind” (Orwell 273). O’Brien argues that the Party and “Big Brother” had control over reality externally due to the fact that nothing exists outside the mind, and in cases of freethinkers, they would be taken care of by the teachings of “doublethink”. Doublethink is the power to hold two completely contradictory beliefs, for example holding up four fingers and claiming that you have five up, and simultaneously making one accept both of them. So if a society was entirely based off of the idea of doublethink as it’s way of forcing lies and reasons of hate on people, then it could work. But the one counter-argument to that

The freedom to express ones thoughts was no longer acceptable and would not be tolerated under any circumstances. Humankind was rapidly transforming into a corrupt and evil state of mind.
In order for the Party to survive in 1984, the people of Oceania must be dehumanized. This cruelty is achieved by removing the people's freedom of thought and emotion, to the point of elimination of all love and connections to everything but the Party. George Orwell drew inspiration from regimes such as Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. These units of government, including Oceania, live in a fragile balance of power, in which total control is necessary for survival.
The brainwashed population no longer recognizes contradictions. Instead, it accepts the Party’s version of the past as accurate, even though that representation may change from minute to minute. The main explanation for doublethink is the ability to maintain two contradictory ideas in one’s head simultaneously and believe them both to be true. In the world of 1984 readers are shown a possible future where government has complete and unchallenged control of the people. The Party exert complete domination over every aspect of the citizen’s lives.There is not a single thing that is not under the Party. Feelings, history, language, statistics, and even human nature are all monitored and limited by Party. The citizens of Oceania don’t even have the decision to fight, they must either obey or die. The intentions of the Oceania government weren’t for the people, but instead for the government. They looked out for what was best for the government, not what was best for the people. Propaganda constantly state how rich and prosperous Oceania is all the time even though the true conditions show buildings are not cared for and resources are sparse.
George Orwell’s haunting dystopian novel 1984 delves into the closely monitored lives of the citizens of Oceania as the Party tries to take control of society. In totalitarianism, propaganda and terrorism are ways of subjugation with a main goal: total obedience. He aimed to create a “what if” novel, what would happen if totalitarian regimes, such as the Nazis and Soviets, were to take over the world. If totalitarianism were to happen, the leader would be the brain of the whole system. Orwell emphasizes the theme of individualism versus collective identity through Winston, the protagonist, and his defiance to the Party and Big Brother, with a frightening tone, surreal imagery and a third person limited point of view.
Corruption of power describes the improbity or abuse of entrusted power by a totalitarian government for self-interest. In the novel 1984, Orwell produced a social critique on totalitarianism and a future dystopia that made the world pause and think about our past, present and future. When reading this novel we all must take the time to think of the possibility that Orwell's world could come to pass. Orwell presents the concepts of power, marginalization, and resistance through physical, psychological, sexual and political control of the people of Oceania. The reader experiences the emotional ride through the eyes of Winston Smith, who was born into the oppressive life under the rule of Ingsoc. Readers are encouraged through Winston to adopt a negative opinion on the idea of communist rule and the inherent dangers of totalitarianism. The psychological manipulation and physical control are explored through Winston's journey, and with Winston's resistance and ultimate downfall, the reader is able to fully appreciate O'Briens reasoning, "Power is not a means, it is an end."
In conjunction with psychological manipulation is physical control. The Party is a totalitarian government and controls every aspect of life. Technology is yet another important theme. Technology is what gives the Party their power and influence. Big Brother, the symbol, as well as the telescreens are motifs that help drive the main conflict.
