Recommendations that best support continuing education of nurses
Nurses are the largest group of workers in health sector (Lowson, 1986) and nurses are the only group in this sector that is expected to provide same level of service in hospitals throughout year and as they work closely to patients they are expected to be expert and competent.(Ofosu, 1993) Continuing education and training are required not only for re-licensure and certification but for knowledge and career growth of nurses. Continuing education and training ‘prepare and enable nurses to adapt in changing scenario of health and medicine’, they learn continuously about emerging medication, diagnostic tests and technologies.

For continuing education program firstly goals established compatible with hospitals mission, then specific objectives consistent with goals are set and with determination of course of action, resources are made assessable. Continuing education and training of nurses is twofold, academic education and professional development.
Academic education is facilitated by most of institutes of medicine. These institution overcome the barriers that nurses face when consider to continue their academic education. Nurses get the flexibility in shift and on-call scheduling for pursuing degrees.
Nurses can’t limit to pursue a degree as their working place is complex and dynamic with constant change in medicine and technology, they do need to update themselves and many a times because of shortage of nurses they even have to work in other specialties also so they have to be competent enough to perform duties in almost all specialties.
