The poem I have created was a personal event that has happened to me in my life. I described my feelings towards my mom and dad using positive and negative connotative words. The reason I used positive connotative words to describe my mom was because she means the world to me and has raised four boys all on her own. The opposite was true about my dad who abandoned us, thus I tried to describe him using negative connotative words. One of the connotative words I used to describe my mom was “mom.” The effect of using this word is if I would have just put mother to me it doesn’t show that you love her it just means she is just the women who gave birth to you. However, using mom to me shows that I actually love her and she actually cares for me.
Another connotative word I used to describe my mom was “rock.” The effect I wanted with this word was she’s always there for me and isn’t going anywhere. My mom will be there to support and help me throughout my entire life, thus she is my rock. Now, one of the connotative words I used to describe my dad was “father”. The reason I used this was because of the saying anyone can be a father but it takes a man to be a dad. Thus I wanted to give the effect that he is my father but he isn’t my dad and we don’t have a very good relationship. Finally, another connotative word I used to describe my father was “chicken.” The effect I wanted with this word to give the reader the idea that my father was a coward and ran when times got difficult for my family.
This poem reflects on how when you lose someone you truly care about it affects you mentally. When we lose someone who we're really close to, we tend to hold a grudge and start questioning our love for the world. We lose ourselves when we
The poem is written in the father’s point of view; this gives insight of the father’s character and

I have elected to analyze seven poems spoken by a child to its parent. Despite a wide variety of sentiments, all share one theme: the deep and complicated love between child and parent.
...nal family. The second poem uses harsh details described in similes, metaphors, and personification. The message of a horribly bad childhood is clearly defined by the speaker in this poem. Finally, the recollection of events, as described by the two speakers, is distinguished by the psychological aspect of how these two children grew up. Because the first child grew up in a passive home where everything was hush-hush, the speaker described his childhood in that manner; trying to make it sound better than what it actually was. The young girl was very forward in describing her deprivation of a real family and did not beat around the bush with her words. It is my conclusion that the elements of tone, imagery, and the recollection of events are relevant to how the reader interprets the message conveyed in a poem which greatly depends on how each element is exposed.
... overall themes, and the use of flashbacks. Both of the boys in these two poems reminisce on a past experience that they remember with their fathers. With both poems possessing strong sentimental tones, readers are shown how much of an impact a father can have on a child’s life. Clearly the two main characters experience very different past relationships with their fathers, but in the end they both come to realize the importance of having a father figure in their lives and how their experiences have impacted their futures.
“The Mother” (Gwendolyn Brooks) has three stanza has and aabbccdd etc. rhyming scheme that is called couplets. The first stanza The first stanza started of “abortions will not let you forget” (Gwendolyn Brooks) this is a strong statement that supported the theme of this poem. Then Brooks go on and telling how the mother did not get to hold the child that she aborted and how sad it was for her.
In the last half of the poem (lines 20 to 33), she changes who she is addressing. Instead of telling the mother what she is missing she is now talking to the "child" .When she does this it expresses other emotions. These new emotions are ones of sorrow, love, searching for forgiveness etc. The arrangement of the poem, going from talking to the mother to talking to the aborted child, is appropriate in my opinion. It helps the poem to flow easily and makes it simple to follow. I find most poems hard to picture in my head , but as I read "The Mother" I can imagine the whole situation happening.
With this in mind, one of the types of themes the majority of authors focus on using is that of emotion. Linda Pastan uses a couple of emotional symbols in her poem to focus on the emotions of the parent and the child. In the poem the lines, “I kept waiting for the thud of your crash,” and the phrase “like a handkerchief waving goodbye,” are symbols of a parent panicking that their child might fall as they’re left behind
The author uses imagery, contrasting diction, tones, and symbols in the poem to show two very different sides of the parent-child relationship. The poem’s theme is that even though parents and teenagers may have their disagreements, there is still an underlying love that binds the family together and helps them bridge their gap that is between them.
Baby’s Romance by Chris Garneau is the perfect song to describe the unnamed narrator of The Lover, because of the belief that pain and love can be mixed into one that is repeated throughout both pieces. All throughout the story, she goes back and forth between love and hate for her dearest mother, the woman who created her and destroyed her all at once. She describes the woman her mother is, making her sound whimsical and beautiful; and then turns around to describe the awful things she does, and the awful things done to her. Even with every remark she has, she never falls low enough to denounce her love. Upon reading this girl’s thoughts and emotions toward her mother, I am left with a similar sense of confusion and clarity, an inconsistent
Although the poem in “Mother to Son” and “If I can stop from breaking” both narrators have a hard life and use it to teach others a lesson, they both use figurative language to demonstrate a great of integrity, however, the lesson they taught is not the same.
This poem is very unique, there are so many ways to interpret it, and still every interpretation emphasises the speakers emotions. There is no rational justification for the cryptic words and phrases used, the reader must look very deeply into the poem to find the hidden connotations, however, this poem could still be considered one of the closest linguistic approximations to what love is.
Form and meaning are what readers need to analyze to understand the poem that they are evaluating. In “Mother to Son”, his form of writing that is used frequently, is free verse. There is no set “form”, but he gets his point across in a very dramatic way. The poem is told by a mother who is trying to let her son know that in her life, she too has gone through many frustrations just like what her son is going through. The tone of this poem is very dramatic and tense because she illustrates the hardships that she had to go through in order to get where she is today. She explains that the hardships that she has gone through in her life have helped her become the person that she has come to be. Instead of Hughes being ironic, like he does in some of his poems, he is giving the reader true background on the mother’s life. By introducing the background, this helps get his point across to the reader in a very effective way. In this poem there are many key words which help portray the struggles that the mother is trying to express to her son. The poem is conveyed in a very “down to earth” manner. An example of this is, “Life for me ain’t been a crystal stair (462).” This quote shows the reader that the mom is trying to teach the son a lesson with out sugar coating it. She wants her son to know that throughout her life has had many obstacles to overcome, and that he too is going to have to get through his own obstacles no matter how frustrating it is. Her tone throughout the poem is stern telling the boy, “So boy, don’t turn your back (462).” The poems tone almost makes the reader believe that the mother is talking to them, almost as if I am being taught a valuable lesson.
The poems that contain parental and familial love are ‘Poem at Thirty-Nine’-Alice Walker, ‘Mother in refugee camp’-Chinua Achebe, ‘Do not go gentle in that good night’-Dylan Thomas, ‘Piano’- D.H. Lawrence and ‘Remember’-Christina Rossetti. The other three poems that focus more on the romantic love between two individuals are ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci. A Ballad.’-John Keats, ‘My last Duchess Ferrara’-Robert Browning, and ‘Sonnet 116 ‘Let me not to the marriage of true minds’-William Shakespeare. Each poet portrays each kind of love with different techniques. The effect of death on different individuals can differ greatly. Some may choose to obtain pleasure from the unpleasant memories of the loss of a loved one, some may see death as an indication to love more, and some may even elect to avoid facing the bitter truth that death displays.
