Snapchat. Instagram. Twitter. These are social media bases that everybody has heard of. It seems like every time I check one of these platforms, someone is doing something crazy like skydiving, or something ‘fun’ like going to a concert. Me? I’m an introvert. I like staying at home, I like being alone or with a relatively small crowd, and I tend to find less enjoyment in things that social media tells me I should like. Something I did recently was buy tickets, Lollapalooza tickets.Maybe it was an impulse buy or maybe I thought it would be fun for a split second but I’m not a concert type of guy. Or at least it’s not bad in moderation, but if you’re a teen in the 21st century you know that you use social media excessively. If I try hard I can avoid social media, but even if I do I feel left out on all the events that occurred while I was out of the loop that I could’ve participated in. The worst feeling is being left out. Maybe that’s what drives me to continue to intertwine my own values with society’s. But nevertheless this can be considered conformity. What is conformity? Psychologist Solomon Asch ran an experiment where a group of individuals were verbally asked some questions in a group and asked to respond one by one, the first few were told to purposefully say the wrong answer and a single individual was tested on whether or not he said his own answer or conformed and repeated the answers the others said. The results? Over 12 trials, 75% of tested individuals were reported to conform at least once. Conformity is the compliance with standards, rules, or laws. Although taken from a very old experiment (1951), a type of conformity can still be seen today by all sorts of populations. But why do I conform despite knowing I don't want to? In today’s society conformity is necessary to basically not be antisocial. If you don’t conform, you’re seen as “that weird guy” or maybe the person who never leaves home. Conformity is a basic need to live in society today. Some people are good at balancing their own values and society’s values, and some people become engulfed in their own values and have no regard for society’s or vice versa. Where do I fall in that spectrum? I think I succumb to society’s values over my own, but just a little bit. This is a constant fight between me, myself, and I, but it is also a new societal norm that everyone surprisingly
