In Ernest J. Gaines’s “A Lesson Before Dying,” a young African American man named Jefferson is accused of murder. Although he didn’t commit the crime, he is charged as guilty and will receive the death penalty by electric chair. The conflict in Jefferson’s life is deciding whether to go against the situation or die like a man. Jefferson’s character is epitome of conflict. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time and is now going to be executed for a crime he didn’t commit. He wants to shut down and rebel because he know the truth. Even when miss Emma brings him food and clothing, he revolts against her love. Deep down he knows that defying against everyone who cares about him won’t help, but he is torn over the sentence he has to faced.
