Football is a dangerous sport and there are many risks associated with the game. It is a demanding sport that not only takes a physical toll on the body but a mental toll as well. With new data showing the link between concussions and CTE, many people are left wondering, is football even worth watching and for that matter, even playing? The NFL initially denied the research of Dr. Omalu, but due to the fact that there has been a drastic amount of former professional football players being diagnosed with CTE, the NFL could not ignore this issue any longer.
As a response, the NFL developed an in-depth protocol to help further decrease the incidence of concussions. Despite the published concussion statistics in the NFL, there are limitations with this data. The data supports the claim that concussion rates vary from each season, with some seasons showing more concussions than the previous season. With this inconsistent information, it is difficult to conclude how successful the NFL protocol is. Using the woodpecker’s anatomy as a guide, a cervical collar was designed to specifically target a player’s internal jugular vein. Myer’s study explained that by compressing this vein, blood volume is increased into the skull cavity, providing an extra cushion to the brain, which restricts the brain from hitting the skull when it receives impact. Although this collar is still relatively new, the data collected from the clinical research on this topic suggest that this collar has efficiently decreased the amount of trauma the brain receives.
