“To jump out of the window would be admirable exercise, but the bars are too strong even to try,” (Gilman). There are an extraordinary amount of stories written about women that go insane for certain reasons. Two of those stories are, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner. Both stories are about women who are driven insane by situations that are happening in their lives; both women turn to isolation for different reasonings. Both A Rose for Emily by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner show similarities and differences with dysfunctional lives.
Both stories were written different years, but both are written about women in the same era. When women went against the norm during the era the stories were written in they were often looked down on. Especially, Emily, who never married and because she was never married she was constantly judged by the women and men in her city. During that time it was odd for women not to be married. The main character Emily in A Rose for Emily is always the main topic in conversations between the women in the story. The women believe it to be odd that she isn’t married for her age, When she does find someone to be with the women judge her because of rumors that her partner is a homosexual. The narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper is always judged by her husband 's sister. She is judged for different reasons than Emily, she is treated badly for this “illness” she supposedly has. 'The Yellow Wallpaper';, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and 'The Story of an Hour';, by Kate Chopin, are alike in that both of the women in the stories were controlled by their husbands which caused them to feel an intense desire for freedom. Both stories were also written from a feminist point of view. However, the women in the stories had different life changes and different responses to their own freedom as a result of that change.
In William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily and Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper, the two main characters exhibit behavior that some readers may consider unusual or even totally crazy. These two women are having a difficult time adjusting to the many changes taking place around them. In the midst of these changes, they face the struggles of being women such as post partum depression and love and rejection from men. Such problems become so overbearing that each woman ends up in their own delusional world which in turn, leads to their isolation and insanity. Gender issues, love, hate, insanity and isolation, are thematic connections in both stories and are important components of how each woman functions throughout the story and how each character fares in the end.

William Faulkner and Charlotte Gilman are two well known writers for intriguing novels of the 1800’s. Their two eccentric pieces, "A Rose for Emily" and "The Yellow Wallpaper" are equally alluring. These authors and their works have been well recognized, but also critized. The criticism focuses on the society that is portrayed in these novels. The modern readers of today’s society are resentful to this dramatic society. These two novels are full of tradition, rebellion and the oppression over women’s rights. Both of these novels share the misery of the culture, but there is some distinction between the two. "A Rose for Emily" is a social commentary while "The Yellow Wallpaper" is an informative novel about the writer herself. The authors outlook focus on the gloomy structure in society during that time frame and therefore, create down hearted, reckless characters that offer stimulation for women of all generations.
Intriguing things such as madness, hallucinations, paranoia, and depression are all traits that make a story memorable and interesting. However, there is more than just madness contained in “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Through the use of an unnamed narrator, Gilman depicts how women of her time were trapped by social barriers.
Madness is one of the key themes in “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It is presented in a way that makes the work of literature a very diverse short story. Although madness isn’t the only theme, it helps the reader better understand many of the other themes in the story. For example, gender inequality, freedom, and confinement. All of these topics can be analyzed through the idea of madness in the story. When I first read this short story I was looking at it through a narrow view of madness and insanity. However, when I read the story again in another course, it allowed me to look at the other themes in this story and analyze them. Because of this I was able to notice things about the story that I had not encountered before. This is why “The Yellow Wallpaper” became one of the most interesting works I have read this semester.
In the short stories “A Rose for Emily” written by William Faulkner and “The Yellow Wallpaper”” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the protagonists experience mental illness, loneliness, feelings of being in control of their lives, and feelings of being insane. Both main characters struggle against male domination and control. The two stories take place in the late 1800’s - early 1900’s, a time where men’s place in society was superior to that of women. Each story was written from a different perspective and life experiences. “A Rose for Emily” was written by a man and told in third personal narration, while “The Yellow Wallpaper” was written by a female and told in first person.
Lack of freedom over time is the theme both stories share. Freedom allows us to develop our morality and our consciences is important. People encounter restrictions and restraints daily: doors, walls, gates. The most frequently used and arduous are those that are intangible, be it in a job or social life, whether physical or emotional, literal or figurative. Both the tangible and intangible are seen in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” and John Steinbeck’s “The Crysanthemums”. Though written by members of the opposite sex, both authors are able to capture the feelings of physical and emotional imprisonment that causes a gradual mental breakdown. “The Yellow Wallpaper” traces the treatment of a woman who descends from depression to madness in the male-imposed psychiatric confinement of her room, while the wife, Elisa, in “The Crysanthemums”, reflects an internal struggle with herself to find her place in a world of definite gender roles. The situations of the two women are similar: talents and dreams, hopes and desires, shunned by the husbands and times of the women, which leads to hysteria; though similar, the women to conduct themselves ways drastically different from one another, which determines whether the women lose their sanity.
In “A Rose for Emily”, the point-of-view is in third-person, but the narrator of the story is not given. Throughout the story, the narrator use “They”, but sometimes the narrator tend to change to first-person and use “We” instead of “They”. When the narrator manage to use the word “We”, they refers it to the townspeople. By using the word “We”, the narrator changes his or her thoughts to the townspeople that make his ideas into a belief in the society. The point of the narrator talk about this story is to tell us the reason of Emily’s death. Just like the protagonist, the narrator is also a mysterious person that doesn’t want to reveal his or her identity. According to the story, the narrator seems understand and care about Emily. The narrator called her as “Miss Emily” whenever s/he states her. In “Why I live at the PO”, the point-of-view is in first person and the sister as the narrator. Throughout the story, the narrator always writes the story with “I” instead of “he” or “you”. The main reason of the narrator to talk about the story is to tell us how there is a conflict in the family. The narrator feels that she is shunned by her family, although she is the breadwinner in her family. Sister can be called as an unreliable narrator as she wants to have revenge on her own sister, Stella-Rondo, who makes her alienated from the family. Gilman’s use of symbolism is nothing short of brilliant in telling the story of a new mother suffering from postpartum depression and fighting her way through societies ideas of what a woman should be. When her husband, John, also known as her physician, tells her nothing is wrong with her mind, at first she believes him because she knows that society tells her she should. In Charlotte Perkins Gillman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the author takes the reader through the terrors of a woman’s psychosis. The story convey to understatements pertaining to feminism and individuality that at the time was only idealized. Gillman illustrates her chronological descent into insanity. The narrators husband John, who is also her physician diagnosed her with “nervous depression” and therefore ordered her to isolate until she recuperates.
