Comparing Tyrannosaurus Rex and Raptor
When I was a little boy, I thought that the tyrannosaurus Rex was the most feared, and dominate dinosaur before the Great Extinction. But after I saw Jurassic park, it was clear to me that the raptor was the better predator. The raptor, as shown in the movie, was quick and deadly. Whereas the Tyrannosaurus Rex was shown as being too big, or too slow to catch its prey. These facts make me believe that the ultimate predator, during the time the dinosaurs roamed the earth, were not the huge intimating ones, but the small and agile ones.
The tyrannosaurus Rex was estimated to be about 15 feet high, 40 feet long, and weighing in about 6 tons. As you can see the tyrannosaurus rex was huge. Actually they were one of the biggest carnivores to walk the earth. But were they even carnivores? “Paleontologist Jack Horner of the Museum of the Rockies (Bozeman, MT) has proposed that T.rex could not have been a predator.” It is evident in most of the fossil remains of the tyrannosaurus rex, that it was not built to chase down its prey. For example, the T-Rex had small eyes, which made it hard for it to spot its prey. The T-Rex also had small arms, which did not allow it to grab its prey, and it had huge legs meant for long distance travel, not small distance speed. Also the teeth of the T-Rex, shows that they may not have eaten other dinosaurs. “And that there is no evidence for predation — bones have been found with tyrannosaur teeth embedded in them or scratched by them, but so far no study has shown that tyrannosaurs killed other dinosaurs for food (a bone showing tyrannosaur tooth marks that had healed would be strong evidence for predation).” All these facts are proven true in Jurassic park. ...

...’t even know for a fact whether the T-Rex was a carnivore or not. As shown is Jurassic park, the characters were able to survive a T-Rex attack by driving away in a car at high speeds. You would probably not be able to do that with a raptor. Also as the T-Rex was chasing its prey, it kept on running into trees and vegetation, which caused it to slow down. Whereas the raptors would use its athletic ability to avoid these obstacles and use them to its advantage. As seen in Jurassic park, the raptors hunted in the large vegetation. They would use the surprise attack on its prey. Where as the T-Rex, because of its size, would have to rely on slower dinosaurs if it were to hunt.

Foremost, both stories are about men who once were very prosperous, but created their own demise. In “The Swimmer”, Neddy, the main character, initially seems to have a perfect life. “His life was not confining and the delight he took in this observation could not be explained...” (Cheever 216) He had a perfect family, high social status and very few problems in his life, or so he thought. Dinosaurs are often compared to and resemble modern day reptiles. Scientists will study how these modern day reptiles behave, look, act, and move to draw conclusions on how the dinosaurs would behave, look, act, and move. They also look at the intern make-up of the modern reptiles to predict how the dinosaurs internal make up would be. However, a recent discovery in South Dakota is stirring up some controversy (Hesman). While Mike Hammer was walking around a ranch in South Dakota he stumbled across a “big-eyed” dinosaur that he now refers to as Willo. The thing that caught his eye was the chest cavity of the dinosaur, upon further investigation he found a rock that was preserved in the curve of the dinosaur’s ribs, he was convinced that this rock was once a heart. Hammer then went on to take the dinosaur fossil in for a medical X-ray scan, this X-ray showed evidence that could change how we think about dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs were first believed to be cold-blooded because they were thought to be related closely to reptiles which are cold-blooded creatures. Cold-blooded animals don’t actually have “cold” blood, instead they rely on the temperature from their environment to regulate their own body temperature. They do this by taking advantage of external heat by basking in the sun, and by lying in the shade to cool down. A more correct term is “ectothermic” which means “heat from outside.” On the other hand, a warm-blooded animal creates heat internally by chemical reactions inside their body. They are able to regulate their body temperature internally instead of relying on their environment. Author of the article, “Dinosaurs: Warm or Cold Blooded?” Beverly Eschberger explains, “endothermic animals have a continually high requirement for food to fuel the heat generation. Providing they can find food their constantly-optimum body temperature means that they can stay active even when it is very cold” (par 3). Even though it was believed that dinosaurs were closely related to cold-blooded reptiles, most dinosaurs had similar behaviors of a bird which is a warm blooded animal. Believing dinosaurs were warm blooded would help explain the reason why dinosaurs were so dominant and plentiful for such a long period of time. Steven Spielberg, the director of this film was very picky about many details of this movie, especially the sounds of the dinosaurs. It took a combination of some very different animal sounds to get the classic T-rex roar. The website Mental Floss states, “The sound design of the T. rex's roar was reportedly a composite of tiger, alligator, and baby elephant sounds.” While the roar of the T-rex is an important part of the movie, the music is vital as well. The music for this film is listed as Billboard Music’s number two on a list of the ten best film compositions from John Williams. There are twenty incredible compositions in the film. The most memorable composition in the film is “Theme for Jurassic Park”. This theme music has gained even more fame recently. In John Cheever’s short story, “The Swimmer” he conveys the transformation of the character through the use of the literary element of setting. The story begins in an American, middle class, suburbs. After what seems to be a night of partying and drinking. Neddy Merrill, the main character initially appears very optimistic; he has a perfect family, high social status and very few problems in his life. In spite of his age, he feels young and energetic therefore decides to swim across town through the neighborhood pools. However, his journey becomes less and less enjoyable as the day unfolds. The water become murky, uninviting and he becomes exhausted. Also the people in his surrounding become less cordial including his mistress who wants nothing to do with him. His voyage then comes to an end when he arrives to an empty, abandoned home. The central idea suggests that an unhealthy obsession with the materialistic aspects of life can lead to alienation.
We use dinosaurs to represent the changes in nature that have occurred throughout time. Studies found that although the “oldest rock did not show evidence of life, the progression of plant and animal life that changed in recognizable intervals, from ancient life, age of reptiles to the age of mammals” (Dino Nature Metaphor, slide 6), measured the age of the earth. When we think of dinosaurs in relation to nature, we think of that very powerful force that controls the cycle of life. There has been a debate about what happened to the dinosaurs since they were discovered. There are many thoughts of what happened to the dinosaurs, the two main theories behind the extinction are scientific and religious. Proof for both theories do exist and debates between scientists are still going on to which one really happened. It is a mystery as much for Evolutionists as it is for Creationists about the extinction of the dinosaurs. The fossil record of dinosaurs was poorly know for a long period of time. During this time period was when the dinosaurs were thought to have gone extinct. The scientific reason for their extinction was that there was a giant asteroid that caused chain reaction and wiped out the dinosaurs. Some scientists say the dinosaur’s extinction came quickly. Evolutionists say the dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago. Creationists say that the dinosaurs weren’t able to survive the Earth after the flood. Both of the theories have supporting evidence and that is why there is an ongoing debate over what really happened to the dinosaurs. The dinosaurs were brought to life using ground breaking CGI by the “wizards” at Industrial Light & Magic and life-size animatronics by Stan Winston. Each frame the digital dinosaurs were in would take hours to render but the results speak for themselves. Stan’s team created animatronics for several of the film’s main dinosaurs. The T-Rex animatronic alone stood 20 feet tall and weighed 17,500 pounds (Jurassic Park (film), 1993). Animatronics were also created for the film’s triceratops, velociraptors and dilophosaurus. To give the dinosaurs their voice, samples from around the animal kingdom were combined to create unique blending of sounds for all the main dinosaurs. To make sure the audience would hear the dinosaurs as he intended, Steven Spielberg invested in the creation of a new company dedicated to digital surround formats called DTS. This brought digital sound into theatres in a way like never before. All of these innovations earned the film three Oscars for best sound, best sound effect editing and best visual effects.
The Triceratops was living in the late Cretaceous Era. It lived about 68 to 65 million years ago. The Triceratops were said to live in the Wyoming, Colorado, and Canadian area, where they have cold winters. The Tyrannosaurs dominated all of their prey in North America at that time. The most popular theory of dinosaur extinction, the asteroid theory, says that dinosaurs died out because of a single, giant asteroid. They say that the asteroid that struck the earth near the Gulf of Mexico went 43,000 mph and spanned six miles wide (Erdman). When it hit the Earth the asteroid it left an enormous crater that measured 24 miles deep and 125 miles wide (Erdman). Just the impact of the asteroid destroyed the forests and landscape of the majority of North America due to its massive shock wave (Erdman). Many species went extinct when the asteroid hit, these species include dinosaurs, ammonites (certain ocean dwelling creatures), pterosaurs, and some plant groups dinosaurs, ammonites (mollusks related to the octopus and the chambered nautilus), pterosaurs, and certain plant groups.
