Poetry is a form of writing in which the expression of feelings and ideas are described in rhyme, similes and metaphors. Poetry has been used for centuries to show humor, romance and to share feeling with others for example, it could be about something funny that happened to you on your way to school and you want to remember it. In now day’s poetry has been used as lyrics as a part of the subject matter of the song. The song “Just the way you are” by Bruno Mars and the poem “Sonnet 130” by William Shakespeare are a piece of poetry. Both writers have described the woman they love using rhymes. The poem and song comprise the same point but with a different approach.
There are two main similarities in both writings. Firstly, both have their own ideas and way of communicating to the reader for example, The Sonnet 130 tells the reader about how unattractive the mistress is to the speaker, but he still loves her. But in the song “Just the way you are” Bruno tells the reader about how beautiful the girl is to the speaker and he doesn’t want her to change. In the Sonnet 130, the main technique which William Shakespeare used was hyperbole (an extreme exaggeration used to make a point. It is like the opposite of “understatement.”), because he exaggerates his love’s weaknesses rather than her strength. On the other hand Bruno Mars has praised about the girl, because he shows his love’s strengths. He complements his love and tries to tell her how beautiful she is and motivates her in the song.
