Piscine Molitor Patel was a young boy from Pondicherry, India. He was on the ship, Tsimtsum, with his family moving to Canada hoping for a better life. Pi, shortened for Piscine Molitor Patel, had an extraordinary journey with no conceivable pattern, similar to the mathematical symbol which displays no recognizable order. His name, both Piscine Molitor Patel and Pi, reflects his life because it provides a description of who he was and his unexpected journey. First, the mathematical value of pi is an irrational number, similar to Pi’s journey because it was illogical. For example, the island that Pi arrived on was full of algae and deemed unusual. Mamaji stated, “It was a pool the gods would have delighted to swim in” (Martel, 11). The swimming pool’s clarity is similar to how Pi is pure because he is young and has not had a lot of experience. For example, Pi had never been on a lifeboat with a tiger and did not have any knowledge of survival. In addition, when Pi was young, his dad had demonstrated that a tiger was not friendly by having it devour a goat. Pi at first panicked by the sight of Richard Parker. Yet, later in his journey, Pi learned to tame him by using a whistle and rocking the boat to make him seasick. Soon, the two realized that they needed each other to survive. For example, on the boat, Pi described his journey as “nothing but grief, ache, and endurance” (Martel, 283). Religion was one of his motivations for survival, therefore, he turned to God whenever he needed help. Pi also acknowledged that he had God with him. When Pi was making a list of supplies he had, he said: “...one lifeboat, one ocean, one God” (Martel, 146). Acknowledging the fact he had God with him, when Pi almost got attacked by the hyena, he wailed “Jesus, Mary, Muhammad, Vishnu!” (Martel, 150). He cried for help from God and Richard Parker saved his life by attacking the hyena before he could get to Pi. In addition, Pi also made a daily routine to keep him sane by incorporating religion by praying. His routine included: wake up, prayer, rest, small activity for the day such as building a raft. This showed how much Pi was devoted to religion. In summary, both of his names Piscine Molitor Patel and Pi reflect his life because it provides a description of who he was and the journey he went on. Pi was a pure and very religious person because he was inexperienced and relied on God for support.
