In the short story “The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson” it states “They were ashamed because they had treated the old grandfather so meanly”. The two short short stories, “Monkey's Paw” and “Grandfather” tell us about consequences of choice in many ways. Characters in “Monkeys Paw” and “Grandfather” help me learn that every choice has its consequences even if they are good or bad. I see this with Theme, Characterization, and Mood. First I will tell you how theme supports my thesis.
I believe the theme of both of these stories is that we have consequences for our choices we make. In “Monkeys Paw” Sergeant Morris made the choice to introduce the monkey's paw to the white family setting up the entire story. In “Monkeys Paw” it states

In “Monkey’s Paw” the loss of Hubert, which was a consequence of wishing for money, made Mrs. White really depressed. In “Monkeys Paw” it states “ ‘it is colder for my son’ said the old woman and wept afresh”. The quote shows that Mrs. White has grew sad and depressed from the loss of her son made her change a lot and it affected the rest of the story. In “Grandfather” the wife changes when she realizes why her son is making a wooden bowl. In “Grandfather” the text states “the young peasant and his wife looked at each other and tears filled their eyes”. That statement shows that the wife and her husband are ashamed of their choices of their disrespect towards grandfather. Seeing their sons treating them the same way makes them realize that they need to change their attitude towards grandfather which they do. In analysis the choices that were made made the characters change because of the consequences. In the next paragraph I will tell you how mood fits into the thesis …show more content…
For “Monkey's Paw” the mood changes every time a consequence happens making the story darker and darker. In “Monkey’s Paw” it states “she broke off suddenly as the sinister meaning of the assurance dawned upon her”. The evidence shows that when Mrs. White realizes what the man is saying the word choice gets darker affecting the mood of the story which is a consequence of the choice to wish on the paw. Another example in “Grandfather” is the mood changes to of a more happy mood when the wife changes and treats the Grandfather more kindly. In “Grandfather” it states “ They were ashamed because they had treated the old grandfather so meanly”. This quote shows that the wife changes her mood and overall changes the mood of the story because of the consequences of her choice. In analysis the choices that characters make the mood of the overall story
The characters and themes in these writings contrast and relate in several ways. The poem is told through the perspective of the grandfather’s grandchild, who cares for him, saying certain things remind them of him after he didn’t “live here anymore” by stating that their grandfather “is blankets and spoons and big brown shoes.” Like the grandfather in “Abuelito Who”, the grandfather in “The Old Grandfather” is old and it is stated that his legs “would not carry him” and his eyes “could not see”, which affected his family’s feelings towards him. The grandfather’s old age was viewed as a weakness, and he was not treated as an equal by his family, such as not being able to sit with them at the table for dinner.
There are many aspects that can lead to tragedy in texts, shame can be a strong aspect however there are others that can be just as dramatic as an aspect for a tragedy to take place. In this essay I will be looking at the effects of shame and other aspects of tragedies.
Which can lead to things that develop the theme of a story. They mood of the story at this moment to make the reader feel that same feeling and the tone of the author or the characters can also have an impact on the mood of the story. In the passage and the play the mood and tone change a few times through the stories. In the passage the mood of Sally is going up the get the job was happy, and kind of scary. However ,she was confident and had a mood of no failure. In the passage when Jesse told her father about her having the dream of being a rancher and him turning her down was sad and angry, mainly because he was classify his own daughter has a woman that only did the “normal things a woman does”. According to the passage, “It took Sally almost half an hour to realize, by the way they regarded her it could only mean one thing-they thought she was a boy… She strode purposefully with her head held high; she didn't have any ties to the town she was in, and the prospect of possible failure didn’t worry her… Heart racing with anticipation, she raised her fist and knocked firmly on Mr. Willis’s door.” (4&6) This shows Sally’s mood about the job changed because of the way that she looked. She thought that now that some people might see her as a boy she might have a shot at getting the job looking and possible acting like one. According to the play, “I am extremely reliable; you know that. And who says I even want a family? That’s so old-fashion. Has it ever occurred to you that the ranch might me more valuable to me? You were given the chance to pursue your dreams-why don't I deserve the same?” (17) This shows Jessie was hurt to see that her dad was trying to change her mind when she wanted to be a rancher and he knew
In the short story, "An Hour With Abuelo", the tale tells us of boy reluctantly visiting his grandfather, Abuelo. The story's theme is that things that you expect may not turn out the way you think. She conveys the theme at the end of the story when the main character learns the theme of the story.
In short, there are multiple similarities and differences in the characters, plot, and resolution in the short story and motion picture “The Monkey’s Paw” that clearly influence the audience. For instance, the difference in characters affects the mood. Similarities in the plot influence the tone, and the corresponding resolutions impact the theme. The director of the motion picture “The Monkey’s Paw” chose to stick to some aspects of the text as well as change some for numerous reasons, some of which include keeping the audience's attention, sustaining the author's tone in the text, and ensuring that the readers and viewers receive the same message.
The point of view and tone for this story helps relate to the theme. The narrative is in third person point of view with limited omniscient. This means that the reader is able to go inside the mind of the grandmother and know what she is thinking and feeling. The only ot...
The first paragraph shows us how he relationship of the family is close by playing chess, they found the monkey paw and the White family got the monkey paw. In the second paragraph, it shows us how the monkey paw is magic and can grant any wish wanted and how much the mother and father wanted their son back right at that second. In the third paragraph, it shows how the son got caught in the machine, how much the father cared about the mother, and lastly how much greed and grief can tear apart family and close relationships. The reason this author included this theme in this short story is to show how much family should and could mean to you, the monkey paw can grant any three wishes and the mother and father used a wish on their lovely son, Herbert by wishing for him alive again, and then after he had died for the second time they wished for their lovely son alive
To begin, one of the obvious similarities between these two short stories is how they both involve terrible disasters that can not be undone. Disasters in both stories do differ, however. “The Monkey’s Paw” involves Mr.
Theme plays a very important part in this short story. Theme is the idea of a literary work abstracted from its details of language, character and action. The great example of theme that is evident throughout the entire short story is the duty to perform certain acts. We can see here that the Irishman Donovan is very big on obeying his duty to carry out orders that have been authorized to him.
In the short story, "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs, I came to the conclusion that Sergeant Major Morris was responsible for the sorrows that resulted from the monkey's paw. For instance, he was the one who owned the paw in the first place, allowed Mr. White to keep it, and even told them how to use it, stating on page 377, "Hold it up in your right hand and wish aloud."
While many people around the world look to America and see a better life waiting for them and the American Dream waiting to be lived, often times this dream never comes to fruition, even if they do reach America. Such is the case in the short story Grandma’s Tales, by Andrew Lam in which a recently deceased Vietnamese grandmother becomes reborn as a much younger and improved version of herself ready to live life to the fullest. This rebirth symbolizes the life that she wishes she lived, however due to constant conflict and famine in Vietnam, and her deteriorating health in America, was never able to do so. Instead of mourning this fact, in her final days the grandmother chooses to live her life through her granddaughters,
The theme in both stories are the same it is be careful what you wish for. I know this because in the “Monkey's paw” even when the man says, “ I warn you of the consequences if you must wish, wish for something sensible” Mr.white still wishes for 200 pounds this was not a very sensible wish it was actually very selfish and childish. As a result That same day a man walked up to his door and says that Mr.white's son was caught in equipment and that, “they wish to present
Theme is defined as the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person’s thoughts, or an exhibition; a topic. Throughout literary history, authors have been using theme to bring a story together and make a point. In order to make a story have a resounding feeling in readers, authors use themes to leave an underlying message which are usually lessons and morals that should be widely taught, such as in children’s books or in fables. In all three stories, “A Rose for Emily”, “Hills like White Elephants”, and “Harrison Bergeron” the author’s use a mutual theme of death and further show how death brings change to each of the main character’s lives in different
The protagonist Hazel in ‘Yesterday’s Weather’ carries the insights of her slightly unhappy marriage and her motherhood. The story illustrates the occurrence of family gathering and how Hazel was affected by this particular trip. In this piece of the story, the readers will pick up on Hazel’s using the third person narration. “Third person limited point of view offers the thoughts and motivations of only one character” (Wilson, M & Clark, R. (n.d.)). That is to say, third person’s usage in the story is only able to give the set of emotion and actions. Therefore, limits the ability for the readers to see the insight of the other characters in the story.
