Since the beginning of mankind, humans always use their skills of persuasion in order to prove a point to an audience. John F. Kennedy and William Shakespeare, though it is a 362 year difference, wrote and announced work displaying persuasion values. John F. Kennedy, in his Inauguration Speech, and Antony, a character in the William Shakespeare play Julius Caesar, uses the tools of language and persuasion in order to deliver the audience their intended reasoning. It was on January 20th 1961 that John F Kennedy gave his inaugural address after winning the presidential race and beating future president Richard Nixon. Cicero believed that a good orator must do three things in his speech: earn the favor of the audience, provide persuasive arguments, and move the audience with emotional appeals. In his defense of Marcus Caelius Rufus one finds an excellent example of Cicero’s work and through close examination can glean some additional information about what Cicero felt was needed in a good speech. With such scrutiny it becomes readily apparent that each of the three objectives need not be attained equally. Because while Cicero does attempt to gain the favor of his audience, provide persuasive arguments, and presents the audience with powerful emotional appeals, he spends a vast amount of time providing the jury with “proofs” (persuasive arguments), a fair amount of time earning the good will of the audience, and only briefly extends emotional appeals towards the close of his speech. Cicero did this for a reason; he did this because it best fit the case being made against his client, the circumstances of the trial and seemed most likely to get him the acquittal he desired. If one peruses Cicero’s monologue, they can figure out why.
John F Kennedy delivered one of the finest speeches on January 20, 1961 after being sworn into office. His inauguration speech was so powerful that it captured the entire nations attention, and quotes from it are still remembered by people today. It is one of the finest speeches ever written. It provides a strong appeal to pathos, ethos and logos, and it is because of this that people who never heard the speech can quote lines from it.

Although both gentlemen used the same three persuasive appeals in their speeches, one was obviously more effective. Antony did a more sufficient job of getting his point across. He understood what he would have to do to win the crowd. He used the three appeals, ethos, pathos, and logos, to his advantage and even though Brutus also used the same three appeals, his speech did not impact the Roman countrymen nearly as much as Antony.
There are many persuasive writers who use ethos, pathos, and logos. Their techniques ensure that the audience leaves remembering the message. Patrick Henry brings out an emotional, religious, and contrasting message to his audience in his “Speech to the Virginia Convention”. Although there are many great rationalist, Patrick Henry is one of the most persuasive because he appeals to emotions, refers to religion, and compares and contrasts Britain to America.
Persuasion techniques are used every day without realizing. During an argument, many people use logics, ethics, and pathos, but not intentionally. These persuasion techniques are unquestionably successful: and therefore a great choice for Marc Antony. Marc Antony used three main persuasion tactics, ethos, pathos, and logos respectively. These tactics are what ultimately changed a mourning group of commoners into an angry mob.
During a most critical moment in United States history, the first words from a young, incoming President Kennedy had to be nothing short of perfect. When Kennedy took office in January, 1961, America was deeply politically divided and at the height of the cold war. A new president, with much to prove, had to deliver a persuasive and unifying message to the American people. The tones and rhetorical devices they used helped to capture their audience by appealing to their emotions and helping to move the views of Antony and Brutus's views across to their listeners. Comparing effectiveness and ineffectiveness of both speeches was important in determining which way the people would be swayed.
Words have a way of making people feel different emotions. The way words are said have such a huge affect on society. During the civil rights era speeches made all the difference and could make or break how people would react to the cause you brought up. Still today public speaking is used in many ways from elections to marketing. Mark Antony and Brutus are able to make speeches using ethos, pathos, and logos to convince Rome for their reason of action and how they are experiencing grief and anger over the loss of a friend. In William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar he displays how convincing people can be in order to get that they want and change an audience’s emotion.
In his prominent 1961 Inaugural Address, John F. Kennedy extensively employs pathos, parallelism, antithesis, and varied syntax to captivate millions of people, particularly to persuade them to stand together and attempt to further human rights for the “betterment” of the world. Kennedy’s effective use of various rhetorical styles succeeds in persuading his audience –the world and the U.S citizens—that his newly-seized position as the U.S. President will be worthwhile for all.
Nobody would think that a single speech or persuasion would be able to turn the tables and none of us thought that the power of persuasion could be that powerful.
