“Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is broken winged bird that cannot fly.” -Langston Hughes The struggle in America that African Americans face throughout America’s history is a saddening story where it can apply to any type of people facing the same problems of inequality. The poem I, too and Mother to Son are both similar with the message that it represents but different in the way the message is said. Mother to Son highlights the struggles that Americans who are poverty stricken may face. They often become discouraged and not want to pursue their dreams. This mother is telling her son that he shouldn’t be so discouraged and that she’s working hard to help her son reach his dreams whether that be becoming an astronaut to being a teacher. She states that her life hasn’t been easy either and that she has faced her own struggles throughout life. She’s making sure her son has a successful life where he’s not surrounded or in poverty. I,too also represents a struggle that Americans may face today which is equality. It could be from Gay rights to Civil rights, Humans in general face a struggle of being considered an equal by peers and family members. It shares a similar story of how you shouldn’t give up even when you’re discouraged and oppressed. In I, too it represents determination to be equal as the other man. Unlike in Mother to Son the poem represents a determination to be successful so her son and be guided and be successful himself. Mother to Son also talks about how her son shouldn’t just give up even when there isn’t any “light” to guide him. Where as in I, too has a type of “light” where he knows he’s going to be successful one day. I,too represents and talks about how when you’re confident and determined nobody will stop you.
