Colonization's Effect on Sanity in African Literature

As white explorers venture into Africa, they encounter the native populations of the land. These interactions illuminate the difference between the two cultures concreting the idea of white superiority as they bring order and civilization. The introduction of diseases, harsh environments and rural living begin to test the mental stability of the colonizers. Through the colonization of Africa, both Heart of Darkness and Things Fall Apart emphasize the deterioration of the white men’s sanity without the rigid boundaries to keep their sense of control. In Joseph Conrad’s book, the colonizers go to Africa in search of ivory, a precious treasure found in the jungles. Mr. Brown had a policy “of compromise and accommodation”, which was lenient toward the native Africans (Achebe 184). He is well respected by the Igbo people and warmly encouraged interactions between them. His policy of gentleness did not interfere with the Igbo religion and allowed for peace among the two groups.Yet, when Mr. Brown fell ill, Mr. Smith’s reign began. He is a militant man who disagreed with Mr. Smith’s ideology. When Mr. Brown left and Mr. Smith took over power, his ways became evil and disruptive to the Igbo society as it infringed on their religious practices. In the eyes of Mr. Smith, “black was evil” (Achebe 184). The mind set of this drastically changed how the clan was dealt with. Perceiving the native people to be evil and corrupted emphasizes the transformation of the white men toward the Igbo. Mr. Smith’s interactions with the natives intensify the gap between their cultures, cultivating a feeling of powerlessness over the Igbo. By not having power of the natives, Mr. Smith feels threatened and succumbs to more forceful ways to control to Igbo people.
