Humans always needed an explanation for the unknown because without it, we end up in fear. Some of us turn into nature to explain things that are not clear to us and some of us find comfort in stories. These stories bring people and countries together but most importantly it brings clarity to people. For most of us, the most important of these stories were the ones about the beginning of our history. There is no way we can go back and watch how our world began and how the first people came to inhabit it but we can make up stories explaining those events. These types of stories have a specific name; they are called Creation Myths. To explain these similarities and differences, let us examine two very distant yet related Creation Myths; the African Bushmen and Iroquois Creation Stories. African Bushmen and Iroquois Creation Myths have different explanations of the story but the premise of the how the world began is the same for both myths.

First of all, the biggest similarity between the two Creation Myths is that both myths have the same fundamental idea. For instance, both stories start out with the world being peaceful; there is no sadness and everyone gets along. Then, something bad happens. For the African Bushmen, the people made fire and disobeyed Kaang. For the Iroquois, the Sky Woman became pregnant. The key thing to notice however is that the base of the story never changes. Therefore, even though there are contrasts between the two Creation Myths, the base of both stories is the same. The main idea never changes, it is just told with different characters and different story lines. Yet, that’s what makes these stories very special. In every single Creation Myth, you can find the specific culture and traditions of the people that created these stories. They are all unique and that is why people believe in them.
