Joyce Carol Oates' "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" is about a young girl's struggle to escape reality while defying authority and portraying herself as a beauty queen; ultimately, she is forced back to reality when confronted by a man who symbolizes her demise. The young girl, Connie, is hell- bent on not becoming like her mother or sister. She feels she is above them because she is prettier. She wants to live in a "dream world" where she listens to music all day and lives with Prince Charming. She does not encounter Prince Charming but is visited by someone, Arnold Friend, who embodies the soul of something evil. Arnold Friend symbolizes "Death" in that he is going to take Connie away from the world she once knew. Even if she is not dead, she will never be the same person again, and will be dead in spirit. With the incorporation of irony, Oates illustrates how Connie's self-infatuation, her sole reason for living, is the reason she is faced with such a terrible situation possibly ending her life.
The open ended design of “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” leaves what happens to Connie to the reader’s interpretation but it also brings to question how it could’ve gone for her if she hadn’t been ignorant and self obsessed and whether if she would’ve been kidnapped either way. Everything can be good in moderation, whether it be the blissfulness of ignorance or the confidence that comes with small amounts of narcissism, but without moderation these ideals can be detrimental to what happens to those who go too
Over the years, many people have analyzed Flannery O'Connor’s story, “A Good Man Is Hard To Find,” in ways which they focus more on the history of O’Connor or the historical background and time period of the story. Such scholars that have done so include Sara Kelley (2008), James Nacua (2008), and even O’Connor herself (1963) one year before her death. These “authors have focused on her grotesque detail” (Kelley) such as violence her use of violence to depict salvation. Even though Sara and James’ analysis of the story is fairly recent, it closely follows O’Connor’s overall analysis of the story from 1963. No one has ever analyzed the story in any other way, but the “whole of idea of grace and salvation” (Nacua) and how it was depicted in throughout the story. How come no one ever does a psychoanalytical analysis of the story, because killing a whole family and then the old grandma last is just wrong. Someone would have to have some serious mental issues to write about something like that or they may have had a rough past. Either way, it in no way justifies writing about killing an entire family for no reason, whether it is about spirituality or not.
Joyce Carol Oates’s “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” tells the tale of a fifteen year old girl named Connie living in the early 1960’s who is stalked and ultimately abducted by a man who calls himself Arnold Friend. The short story is based on a true event, but has been analyzed by many literary scholars and allegedly possesses numerous underlying themes. Two of the most popular interpretations of the story are that the entire scenario is only dreamt by Connie (Rubin, 58) and that the abductor is really the devil in disguise (Easterly, 537). But the truth is that sometimes people really can just be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Connie, a victim of terrifying circumstance will be forever changed by her interactions with Friend.
In conclusion, the characters have the same morals after reflecting on the stories. They both think that they are higher up in the world than everyone else and that is the most important thing. The grandmother from A Good Man is Hard to Find realizes that it is not the most important thing in the world to be above everyone else and that it is important to connect with people and find common ground. Mrs. Turpin is somewhere in the middle with holding herself above everyone else because she is really confused by what she saw. She believed that she was the best so I think she is in shock. Flannery O’ Connor modeled these characters after one another because they are just too similar to be a coincidence.

The protagonist in this story is the grandmother and the antagonist is The Misfit. In any other short story, the protagonist and the antagonist would not have much in common, but that is not the case in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”. The three major similarities between the grandmother and The Misfit is that they are both the oldest one in their groups, they are both hypocrites, and they both are missing important spiritual relationships.

Just like every other teenager, she is searching for a purpose and trying to find her place in society.
