“There’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads- they couldn’t be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s word, the white always wins. They’re ugly, but these are the facts of life”. Most people have come to believe that opposites are usually similar in some ways. In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird”, two children Scout and Jem encounter changes in their small town. Their father Atticus has taken up a challenging case, and the whole town seems to be affected by it. The two children, Scout and Jem, handle the changes between each other in the individual ways through their different actions. But when it comes down to their true values, things remain the same.

In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” the author sets different purposes for the characters Jem and Scout to do. Throughout the story, Scout serves as the narrator, therefore most of the story is written as an eight year old would see it. Also, Scout had the job of playing with Dill all summer. The two children seem to keep occupied with the talking of Maycomb’s on going changes in the towns people. They also keep occupied with Scout’s plans for a lot of games with Boo Radley to emerge from his house. Jem’s overall goal throughout the story is to help Atticus keep Scout in line. …show more content…

When Scout is burdened or upset by a situation, she usually lets someone, such as Atticus and Calpurnia know. She is not the one to hide behind the actions of others. On the other hand, Jem seems to hold his feelings in until they are forgotten. He burdens himself with the problems of others, all the while wishing to be a better man like his father
