The stories of Nick Cassavetes The Notebook (2004) and Richard Curtis About Time (2013) are both similar yet different in their own ways. The Notebook is an American romance drama film starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling that was extremely successful not only in American box office but also shared great worldwide success. This film exemplifies the struggle between love and social class. Two young lovers have to face social class boundaries and put their loves on the line. The approach that this movie trying to make is a relevant topic in the world we inhabit today and undoubtedly contributed to this film’s success. In the beginning of The Notebook, an elderly named Duke read a romantic story from his notebook to a fellow patient to tell the love story between Noah and Allie. Towards the end of the film, Duke who is in fact Noah became the narrator and be the one who told Allie their love story. In addition long dialogue is also used as a way to tell the story in this film. The long dialogue is mostly found between the two main characters, Noah and Allie when they arguing and throwing tantrum with one another. A very long running continues scenes of dialogue would go back and forth between the two characters. In the film About Time, narration is used to when Tim is telling his story. One example would be at the end of the film when Tim was telling the audience about what exactly happened to his life at the end and about his final message. He comes to realize that it is better to live each day once, and appreciate everything rather than going to the time travel in order to change his future. Although both films used narration as their way of telling the stories, there is a difference in the way each story was told. In The Notebook film, the narrator told the story in a kind, gentle and loving way and is directed to a specific person. In The Notebook, is an adaptation based on the 1996 novel of the same title by Nicholas Sparks and later then directed by Nick Cassavetes. The director Nicholas Sparks, choose to set his story in small North Carolina towns to taps into a sense of nostalgia among readings. The pace of life is slower, there 's less traffic, and people tend to know their neighbors; each town has its distinct idiosyncrasies and charms. In addition, the story focused on dementia (Alzheimer) as a source of awareness on the effect of this disease, such as the effect that it has on President Donald Reagan who died due to Alzheimer age of 93 in 2004. In addition to the context, in the story Noah was enlisted to go to World War II, this can be connected with the Iraq war that was going on at the time the movie was produced. The film was received well by a lot of viewers due to the sentimental fantasy and love story. In About time, director Richard Curtis written the script simply because he want to know the true meaning of happiness. Boston Marathon bombing tragedy that happened on April 13, 2013, resulted many people to get killed and left hundreds of people to be mourn and unhappy. This tied in to the theme that this movie’s trying to portrayed, happiness, whether happiness will still be there after a big tragedy.
