Civilizations that Changed our World The Gupta Empire, an ancient Indian empire, and the Chou Dynasty, a Chinese empire contributed many great theories, ideas and technologies to our present-day world. But which one improved our lives the most? The Gupta Empire rose at roughly 320 B.C.E and fell at 600 B.C.E. The conquered most of the land that we now call India, a subcontinent in Southern Asia. The land and climate varied immensely, but it was generally very hot. The humidity would depend on location. The Chou Dynasty lasted from 1122 to 221 B.C.E. The climate and topography is like India’s because they share a border. Like the topography, the Gupta Empire’s government was very similar to the Chou Dynasty’s, too. They both had a hereditary monarchy, but India’s way of rule was known for being slightly more developed and different because of the spreading of power. Both of these Asian civilizations mainly ate rice. The also ate meat, but the Gupta Empire civilians were mostly vegetarian because of their religious beliefs. Religion was very big in both ancient civilizations. Many in the Gupta Empire believed in either Hinduism or Buddhism. The Gupta Empire even invented universities where people went to practice and learn about their religion along with regular subjects like math, reading, and writing. They had also spread Buddhism to China, who didn’t really have a big religion back then, and it is now the most popular religion in China today . Now back to the question. Which ancient civilization most helped form our world into what into what it is today? Using this information, I am sure that the Gupta Empire has helped us the most. They created a place value system, were the first to use zero as a place-holder, and were the first to have universities. It is clear that the Gupta Empire has shaped our world more than the Chou
