A Mother’s love cannot be defined by a dictionary. Their love stems from actions, struggles, experiences and risks they encounter throughout their life which; helps formulate the mother they will put into existence .these life changing ordeals not only affect the mother but the child as well. With this in mind, let’s narrow into the child being a daughter. The relationship of a mother and daughter will not only be affected by her mother’s past but ultimately be with the daughter until herself because a woman and mother. Is it a mother’s generational curse or a gift of genes? These are questions that arise in two works of literature written during the 20th century, Sula by Toni Morrison and Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. The past experiences …show more content…

Sula felt abandoned by her mother growing up. Her mother mentions to a friend, “You love her like I love Sula. I just don’t like her. That’s the difference.” Sula hears this and becomes a bit confused and hurt. Even if she isn’t liked by her mother, the fact that Hannah told her friends this publically and didn’t see if Sula could hear made Sula upset .Not only did Sula feel abandoned by her mother not liking her but loving her because she has to, she felt betrayed. In the quote, “…where the mother, Hannah never scolded or gave directions; where all sorts of people dropped in,” it mentions Hannah’s nonchalant attitude about everything and the “no rule” environment she enforced. Sula abandons the rules also when he best friend Nel gets married and she moves away from their town. She leaves for a period of ten years without any visits or direct contact. While she is away she does as she please, have sex with all men, and gets bored when others go into the whole “normal” category. The idea of madness is a result of the mothers raising the girls into womanhood. Their parenting helped contribute to their mind states. It’s not as much seen in Sula but necessary in the novel Wide Sargasso Sea. In Sula, Hannah wasn’t around as much as she could have been. First off, Sula was raised in a big house full of her grandmother and boarders. These boarders rented rooms and were total strangers. Her mother had guys in and out the house which can put inquires in the mind of a child. While viewing such things as a child her loss of innocence was in full affect. Sula’s home wasn’t stable and Hannah herself wasn’t stable. Hannah used sex as her getaway and wanted when she wanted by anyone. In doing this Sula transition into adulthood was abrupt and unstable. She grew up before her time and emotion state was not intact. Sula went to other avenues to find love and nurturing where her mother didn’t provide.
