Star Wars vs Star Trek:
The ideology of Star Wars and Star Trek.
Star Wars and Star Trek and are both popular universes in theaters and on television. I will not be comparing them as art forms, but as the ideologies behind them. The three points I will cover are the Economics, The Identity, and Politics of the universes as revealed in the television shows and movies.
In Star Trek it is a different world than is seen on Earth. It is a world of communism. There is no money in the federation and they rely on working together with talent. This is strongly contrasted by the system found today and that of Star Wars. While Star Trek is based in our galaxy and Star Wars is not there are several differences of Star Trek and the current system we have today. Star Wars works on a money system much like our own, but Star Trek

utilizes a communist system not unlike the USSR of yesteryear. In this system the value of hard work is not rewarded by money. It is reminiscent of a military structure that is employed in Star Trek. The value of your hard work is established in your rank and possible promotions. The system is much more open in our own world and the world of Star Wars. In Star Wars we have a strong system based on financial gain as seen with their bounty hunters who collect credits for financial reward after missions. Star Trek presents capitalism in a more negative light as seen with some aliens who put profit first. (Star Trek) Identity is underrated. In Star Trek identity is squandered. Star Wars offers identity in a form of planetary patriotism. In Star Wars the importance of planets and the meaning to the individual is paramount. The senate shows support for their planets in 1, 2, and 3. This is squashed under the empire. Then we see the rebellion does not share the emphasis of the earlier republic. Some characters have stronger ties to their planet than others. Most notably we see Alderaan Princess Leia’s home world as an icon of her. The loss of this planet is tragic. On the Star Trek side there is patriotism to Starfleet and the Federation of Planets, but the same magic is not there. The pride is gone. Your planet and nationality is not of value. While mentioned the gravity of the patriotism in Star Trek is much smaller than in our own world and that of Star Wars. Star Trek squanders personal uniqueness. Something protected in the Star Wars universe. Star Trek requires you to fit the mold of society, but Star Wars is full of variety. From bounty hunters to pod racers the roles characters can take are broad. In Star Wars and Star Trek no comparison is complete without delving into religion. Star Wars revolves around a hidden force that binds the universe together. Star Trek drifts away from any deeper will or fate in the universe. They try to focus purely on the science while Star Wars opens up a complex religious ideology. Politics is a core aspect of Star Wars vs Star Trek as well and no comparison can be complete without it.
The Star Wars Republic is a Republic. A Republic is like the United States of America. The goal of a Republic is to build on founding principles such as the American Constitution. These rights cannot be overwritten even by the democratic process found in America. In Star Wars this government is overthrown by emergency order to form a new empire out of the Republic. Communism was a topic of interest during the development of Star Trek. Communism is a populist ideology that draws stark contrast to Republics and Democracies. (How Stuff Works) Star Trek is often consider as a socialist organization, but that label is incorrect. The communism society designates jobs and removes money in which it is all controlled by the government. The writer of Star Trek Gene Roddenberry (KODM 979 FM) took a utopian approach to Space Travel. George Lucas took an approach that mirrored our own existence. Communism never really works since it fails to reward hard work as seen in a video example from fox regarding income redistribution with the example of student GPA.
(FOX) In conclusion I note that Star Wars is far more relatable and inclusive universe. I believe Star Wars is a world worth living in. Star Trek squanders ideas that do not comply with the general populace. Other species are mocked for interest in trade or religion. Star Trek squanders that which makes us human. It is a story of chasing perfection. A story we can never realize. Star Wars on the other hand draws similarities. I believe this is why Star Wars is so much more successful. It feels honest and free.
Harry Potter started out with books to read, then the movies were made. While Star Wars started with movies and still has no books. Harry Potter focuses on the same main characters the whole series, but Star Wars has many different main characters throughout the series. Star Wars makes more money than Harry Potter by $0.02 billion. Star Wars is “the second highest-grossing film franchise of
In his article titled, “Star Wars and the Roman Empire,” Martin M. Winkler writes on Lucas’ trilogy and compares the storylines in the films to the Roman empire while placing focus on the similarities
My introduction to The Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy series by Douglas Adam began with another version of the book by one of my favorite author, Eoin Colfer, his version was humorous, dramatic and have a bit action. I was curious to read the original author’s version and found it on equal ground, if not better than the other version. The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy is a new experience for those who are familiar with other science fiction novels. while most of the science fiction novels are more focus on action, drama, romance, death by robots, or dystopian futures. The Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy are more on comedy, irony, mistakes, politics and many other things. The pacing or the story is somewhat fast so I had to reread the
Communism ensures a lot of power and equality, as in “Harrison Bergeron”; however, the acts of both governments differ from each other and from the U.S. government. Communism today has no copyright laws, no private property laws, and the government owns the economy in its entirety. Communism stresses the ending of both religion and the entire morality established upon religion. Communism theoretically tries to improve respect within society, but instead it abolishes all concepts of morality (Communism and Amorality). The structure of communism encourages the establishment of classless and stateless society based on the common title of the means of production (Structure of Communism). It tries to offer an alternative to the problems assumed to be inherent with capitalist economies and the heritage of imperialism and nationalism.
Gene Roddenberry once said that he had “no belief that Star Trek depicts the actual future, it depicts us, now, things we need to understand about that.” He helmed a show that, in its very first episode, promised to boldly go where no man had gone before... and go there it did. Throughout its run and multiple spinoffs, Star Trek made powerful social commentary in line with its creator’s vision.
Macbeth is a play written by William Shakespeare. It is considered one of his darkest and most powerful tragedies. Set in Scotland, the play dramatizes the corrosive psychological and political effects produced when evil is chosen as a way to fulfil the ambition for power. The play is believed to have been written between 1603 and 1607, and is most commonly dated 1606. It is a timeless classic and its themes resonate within some of the most common movies and books of modern times. Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. The film series, consisting of two trilogies, has spawned an extensive media franchise called the Expanded Universe including books, television series, computer and video games, and comic books. The franchise depicts a galaxy described as far, far away in the distant past, and it commonly portrays Jedi as a representation of good, in conflict with the Sith, their evil counterpart. Their weapon of choice, the lightsaber, is commonly recognized in popular culture. It is arguably a cinematic masterpiece, holding in rank two of possibly the greatest trilogies the world has ever seen. It is a timeless epic which embodies within it an allegory for the history of the world; the rise and fall of empires and their emperors; the pursuit of power; the melting pot of cultures; the struggle for survival; the advancement of human technology; and most importantly as a whole, the history of humanity. Steven D. Graynus declared, “Ultimately, what the Star Wars films offer is….rousing storytelling suffused by themes of moral struggle and transcendence” (Decent Films Guide). The franchise's storylines contain many themes, with strong influences from philosophy and religio...
Communism is the study of how everyone is at peace and works together. There is no need for competition or armies because no wars are going on. The gap between the rich and the poor is eliminated and everyone has the same wealth to make everything perfect and fair. All human activity goes towards benefiting each other. Private property and all private businesses are eliminated. Instead of working for yourself to make a living for yourself, you are making a living for the country or society that you live in. In document 3: Friedrich Engels says that “ above all, (the government)... will have to take control of industry and all branches of production out of the hands of… competing individuals, and instead institute a system as whole, that is for the common account, according to a common plant, and with the participation of all members of the society. It will… abolish competition...Private property must therefore be abolished.” This creates an equality in the economic system. There are economic equalities now, because equality in the amount of work will get you an equality in pay. This eliminates the amount of money between the rich and poor closing the gap between the two. All of this equality meets the needs of the proletariats. The Proletariats were the working people in the lowest class. The workers worked and then the bourgeoisie took the money from the products and the proletariats got nothing from their
First of all, the technology of Star Trek and Star Wars hold some similarities, but
Imagine flying through a ice covered planet or zooming through the sand plains of tattoine or battling against the dark side next to Luke Skywalker well sounds amazing right? These are the things that make the Star Wars universe so fascinating in the upcoming paragraphs about how Star Wars has elements of story, that make Star Wars so popular. Star Wars is a cultural institution of immense proportions. Its impact on Hollywood alone has been incalculable. It’s impossible to imagine Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., The Matrix, or The Lord of the Rings without Star Wars. Yes because all these movies have been impacted from Star Wars they all transfer you to a different era from you fighting off Nazis to walking into mordor.
Communism is an economic system where, in theory, ownership of everything (e.g. goods, industrial products, businesses, farm produce, etc.) is collectively by the Government and the payment of income is only based one’s need. In communism, individuals have little say or on say at all on what to produce, not even owning anything since ownership is only by the Government. Communism is a socio-economic structure based on classless, stateless society where the means of production are on common ownership. Therefore, communism is the idea of free society where there is no divisions, humanity is not oppressed, no need for Government or countries. A citizen earns according to their needs and gives according to their abilities to do so.
Common misperceptions have convinced Americans over the years that communism is corrupt form of government. In reality, the leaders of so called communist countries are corrupt. Communism is an economic system derived by Karl Marx, which in theory is composed of publicly owned property and wealth spread equally among the population. According to Merino in his preface to What Are Some Concerns About Capitalism?, “Communism’s defining feature is the public, or communal, ownership of capital” in which “the means of production owned and utilized by all for the common good” where there is no difference in the wealth between the people. Communism and capitalism have opposite values, while communism is beneficial for society as a whole, capitalism
Communism is a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs.
Communism is a system of government, a political ideology that rejects private ownership and promotes a classless, stateless society based on common ownership of all property and the means of production, where all work is shared and all proceeds are commonly owned. Communism is practised in China, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos and Cuba. However, most of the world’s communist governments have been disbanded since the end of World War II. Soon after the Japanese surrendered at the end of World War II, Communist forces began a war against the Kuomintang in China. The Communists gradually gained control of the country and on the 1st October, 1949, Mao Zedong announced the victory of the Communist party and the establishment of the People's Republic of China.
Everything is run by the state and should be run by the government on behalf of the people. No private person is allowed to profit from the work of other citizens. Communism is a controlled economy. All profits don’t go into the pocket of one owner; the profits go to the state, which benefits everyone.... ...
Communism is an original system of society, quite different from Democracy in many ways. While total democracy is not widely spread, many forms of it are prosperous throughout the world today.
