I used to live in the suburbs of San Francisco (tarlock). Now I live in Chicago . san Francisco is very different from Chicago. san Francisco has a better weather . San Francisco is hotter than Chicago, for example Chicago has a wet springs hot, and humid summers and cold winters and Chicago have more snow than rain but San Francisco has only rained and no snow. Another difference between San Francisco and Chicago is the transportation. For example the people of Francisco prefer to ride a bike or walk instead of using a car, but the people of Chicago like to drive a car or take a public transportation instead of walking. In Barbara Berlund’s Making San Francisco American: Cultural Frontiers in the Urban West, Berlund explains how San Francisco grew from a young settlement which grew rapidly thanks to in part of the California Gold Rush which took place in 1949. Of course with the growing of this small settlement came it’s conflicts and how it rised to where it stands present day. A primary factor which helped San Francisco flourish a ton was the influence from those who had power and chose what would happen throughout the city, for example the Big 4. Those who were wealthy did not make this city what it is today without the help of people who made up the middle class as well. Every establishment within this city set the social order as to how the inhabitants of San Francisco would go about their life in society.
There are always different areas and beliefs in big cities, but in some cities they are taken to a whole new level. Everyone is proud of where they are from naturally, whether it’s in regards to their sports team, schools, or maybe a famous product that originated from there. There is a very well known divide in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, where there seems to be a highway or street creating an invisible line. Cincinnati is well known for its education, food, and the diverse lifestyles one may be able experience in the rather large suburban area. If someone asks a Cincinnatian where they’re from, they will proudly respond with either the Westside or Eastside! Common phrases one may hear are, “Westside best-side or Eastside money-side.” It’s not necessarily true that someone is considered good or bad due to their response; it’s just a pride factor to them.
Sacramento is a bustling city with a diverse population and a city structure to match. In the last few decades the growth and development within our area has grown exponentially, land that was completely vacant fields and farmland has been replaced with shopping centers and freeways, expanding with the population increase in recent years. With the fast-track building of these areas before the economic collapse, more areas were developed than can currently be filled, which unfortunately has left many new buildings empty and lots paved for new construction or parking lots left unused. This is in addition to the expansion of roads and freeways in an attempt to relieve the traffic congestion that comes from rapid urban growth.

In Chicago, there are seventy-seven communities that are section into 9 districts. In these 9 districts, there are many similarities and differences to each other. The differences and similarities are the appearances of the neighborhood, the people who reside in the neighborhood, and the criminal activity in that neighborhood. The two neighborhoods are Lincoln Park and Hyde Park.
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. I lived in a very welcoming neighborhood. As a child, I had many friends on my street. We would ride bikes, climb trees, visit the playground at the local park district, and stay outside until the streetlights turned on. The families on my street always looked out for each other, so we didn't worry too much about safety. All of my friends attended the same school and participated in the Chicago Park District's activities such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, music and dance lessons, and open gym events. The park district hosted an annual gym show so the kids could perform for their families. Residents would get together on most Sundays to talk about issues in the neighborhood and share meals and stories.
It is interesting that two cities over 7,000 miles apart from one another, and in completely different time periods, could have so many similarities. The city of Chang’an in China during the Tang Dynasty was set up in a grid fashion similar to that of modern day New York City. Flourishing trade was of great importance to the development of both cities, but very different political systems were used to govern each. Modern day New York City and Chang’an during the Tang Dynasty share key similarities as both were important trade centers in strategic locations, but were run on very different political lines.
Gary is not just the butthole of Indiana- it's the butthole of Illinois, the USA, and I'd argue the rest of the world as well. To imagine just how terrible Gary is, visualize the grand city of Chicago. It's nowhere near perfect, and is on the decline, but still has fantastic neighborhoods and is home to millions. Now, make the city 10-15 times smaller, remove every skyscraper and notable landmark from your imagined skyline, double the number of factories, and add a distinct, disgusting smell that needs one single word to describe it: Gary. Not only is that the name of your smell, it's the name of the armpit you just created.
There’s a lot that could be said to convince you that renting apartments in Oakland would be one of the best decisions of your life. Maybe you’d be interested in the fact that Oakland is a smart city; it’s one of the top cities when counting residents with bachelor’s degrees. Maybe you’d be intrigued by the fact that Oakland is known for its ethnic diversity, as well as its sustainability practices. Many more facts could be spewed at you, and they’d all add up to one thing—Oakland is an awesome, hip place to live.
A major distinction, among others, between Chicago and Los Angeles is that the immigrant neighborhoods are different as Chicago immigrant neighborhoods have roughly half the violent crime rate when compared to other Chicago neighborhoods, whereas in Los Angeles, immigrant neighborhoods have greater violent crime rates compared to other neighborhoods. Kubrin and Ishizawa (2012) focused on two different immigrant neighborhoods for both Chicago and Los Angeles. In Chicago, one neighborhood was located at the north end of the city, while the other was located in the center of the city; both Chicago neighborhoods had average crime rates that were lower than the average crime rate of Chicago as a whole. San Francisco is one of the most modern and accepting culture there is in the world. San Francisco has largely become what it is due to the past historical events that shaped this culture to the way it is, as well as the kind of people these events brought into this city. In a way, the series of events that unfolded seemed to work almost too perfectly, and turned San Francisco into the city it is today.
Los Angeles: A Diverse Metropolis. People always wonder why the City of Angels is different from other cities. This paper will answer this question and explain the uniqueness that makes L.A., “L.A.” Los Angeles, since its birth as an embryonic city, has become one of the most diverse metropolises, offering to the public what no other city can. This paper will emphasize the relationship between the federal government and the western United States.
Working environments, for instance, vary among people who live in the cities and those in the country. City dwellers generally have a commute, sometimes a long, arduous and congested jaunt. Jobs are more plentiful in a city setting; however, the fast paced working environment in the city can cause great displeasure. Some would dispute, though, that it would be easier to get another job because the market is higher. Although I agree the job market is greater in the city, likewise, so is the number of prospective job seekers.
The two neighborhoods that I chose to use for this assignment are vastly different. The main reason is because they are on opposite sides of the country. The first neighborhood that I visited is the one that I grew up in. This neighborhood is in Connecticut, on the East Coast, all the way across the country from the neighborhood that I currently live in here in West Hollywood. Most of my family lives in Connecticut and Massachusetts and I’m the only one who lives on the West Coast. A big difference is that the neighborhood in Connecticut has houses that are more spaced out, have larger lawns, and very many more trees. There are very few apartments there, unlike where I live now where my entire street is almost all apartment buildings.
One major issue affecting many people trying to make the decision on where to live is their quality of life in either extreme. Health, education, transportation are three major concerns that many consider. In a city, pollution surrounds you wherever you step whether on the streets of a busy financial district or on the lawn of a large park. Pollution could possibly cause health problems later in life. In the country, pollution is scarce. Fresh air, rolling green hills, a few pieces of litter here and there but pretty much everything is clean, and wow! No smog, you can see the stars! In the country, childhood education, kindergarten through twelfth grade, is significantly better than in a large city; smaller class sizes and larger budgets create excellent learning environments. In cities, public schools are often plagued with very large classes packed into small spaces. Teachers with low pay, and little or no dedication are thrown into classrooms to teach, resulting in poor education. Transportation is very accessible in city environments. Public transportation, by way of subways, busses and ferries, are cheap and easy ways of getting around a metropolis, whether going out to work, school, or for a night on the town. In the country, everyone needs to have access to his or her own vehicle. A commute to work or school is about an average of forty-five minutes!
