Science fiction is a genre of fiction in which the stories often tell about science and technology of the future. After reading the two science fiction short stories “Old Glory” and “Harrison Bergeron”, I’ve noticed that both authors use futuristic details to develop the theme of their stories, and use similar techniques to portray the theme. Both stories use literary devices, like imagery to help the reader better understand the text. For one thing, the authors of both stories use futuristic details is in the story “Old Glory” it states “He stood and pointed to the big flag that hangs over the holo set. “That's ridiculous! In addition, in both stories the main character wants to prove his point and opinion to a crowd of people, but in the end gets killed. In the short story “Old Glory” Gran-Da went into the town and tried to light the flag on fire and he said “Bit by bit, piece by piece, we've given away all the things this used to stand for. SOS was the end of it. Now this poor old flag doesn't stand for anything at all. That being so, I think it's time to put it out of its misery” and then he got shot, for stating his own opinion. In “Harrison Bergeron” Harrison just wanted to take off his heavy handicaps, and actually show his face because it wasn’t fair, so he stood up and tore off the handicaps in front of everyone, and showed his beautiful face. Furthermore, the stories make you have to re-read some parts to understand what is happening, and they use suspenseful techniques to portray the whole story. One similarity between “Harrison Bergeron” 2081 is that George had a mental handicap. This is important to the story because since the transmitter sent a sharp noise “to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains”, neither he or Hazel could think about Harrison for very long or even remember that he had been killed seconds after it happened. This was also important to the film because it showed us pieces of what happened the night Harrison was taken away and gives the audience an idea what the handicaps feel like for the characters.
Living in a space ship would be cool, and living in a more equal world would be beneficial, but when portrayed in “Wall-E” and “Harrison Bergerson,” only pain and suffering can come of it. The two societies compare because they are set off in the distant future; filled with advance technology of robots and intricate machinery involved in day to day lives. Both of these tales have the same back bone of their different types of dystopia: break down.
Technology has been around as long as people have and has been advancing ever since. It is the reason that we have access to the miraculous tools that we do today. From the forks that we eat our supper with to the cars that get us from place to place technology is everywhere. However, with technology advancing at such a rapid pace, it could pose a threat to our future society. This statement portraits the unjust punishment for being unhandicapped, but is this punishment better or worse than death? Harrison Bergeron is a short story that has a deep meaning to it. To begin with, the short story Harrison Bergeron was made in 1961 and is written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. The whole short story is set in the far future of 2081. 2081 is a time where everybody is finally equal and when the government finally has full control over everyone. If you aren't equal you would have to wear handicaps to limit your extraordinary strength and smarts. As the story progresses, Harrison Bergeron is trying to send a message about society.
Harrison Bergeron is a hero to society. He is a hero because he was the only person willing to take off his handicap. Bergeron was a brave person. No one else was brave enough to try to be unique. Everyone was following what they were told to never questioning it, but Bergeron wasn't. He wants to discover new things. Yes he might have been scaring people, but they had no reason to be scared. They could have been helping and joining instead of being scared and rebelling from him.
“Harrison Bergeron” starts with explaining the society within the story. It begins, “The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way,” (Vonnegut 158). With this startlingly different introduction, Vonnegut explains that everyone is equal but does not include how during this time. As the story progresses, the reader begins to see exactly how the citizens are “equal.”
Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s short story “Harrison Bergeron” was created during the time frame of the Civil Rights Movement and the Cold War and encompasses the definition of the word satire. Though the story itself is set in the distant future, the year 2081, one can see the influence of the past in this dark satirical portrayal of an American society. The author satirizes the very elements he was exposed to in his own environment and lifetime. Vonnegut mocks forced ideas of equality, power structures, and oppression, ideas that were prevalent and thriving in the atmosphere of his time of writing “Harrison Bergeron”.
The theme statement of Harrison Bergeron is that egalitarianism is inefficient, and will eventually be resisted by society. Competition is what drives society forward, and if everyone is equal, we are not developing as one. Many of the people in the story are unable to complete their basic tasks or jobs. “It wasn’t clear what the bulletin was about, since the announcer, like all announcers, had a serious speech impediment.” this is unreasonable as it is the announcer’s job to broadcast the news, and when he is unable to do so, he has lost his purpose (61). Kurt Vonnegut, a modern American writer, composed stories about fictional situations that occurred in futuristic versions of today’s world. His stories included violence, both upon oneself and one another, and characters who sought out revenge. In “2BR02B” and “Harrison Bergeron”, Vonnegut conveys physical violence most likely experienced while a prisoner of World War 2, as a way to show how war brings pain and destruction.
The theme of the “meaning of freedom” is a common theme between the two stories “A&P” by Updike, and Harrison Bergeron by Vonnegut. In both stories, the characters are take different routes to rebel from the standards of society. In A&P, gender roles are heavy, and Sammy is expected to conform, but he does otherwise by leaving his job. Harrison Bergeron takes place during a time where the human population is expected to be equal, but Harrison steps beyond these limits. These characters show that conforming to society truly does not make you free, in fact it holds you back from your full potential.

In Anthem everything is done for the good of society and the group, no one is an individual. While in “Harrison Bergeron” people have handicaps to make everyone mentally and physically equal. The main characters in each story, Equality 7-2521 and Harrison Bergeron, are both tall, athletic, tenacious and intelligent men, who are threats to the collective societies. Although “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and Anthem by Ayn Rand are both pieces of dystopian literature, their portrayal of family differs greatly.
Science fiction is a genre, which depicts what life would be like in a world with major scientific and technological developments. When it comes to science fiction, the exploration of future technology is a major element. Many stories and films focus on space, robots, aliens, a mad scientist, and/or artificial intelligence. “The universal themes found in science fiction—themes of freedom and responsibility, power, love, individuality and community, good versus evil, technology run amok, and more—present ample opportunity to explore complex issues and compelling controversies at length and in depth in ways that not only engage the intellect, but involve the emotions and expand the imagination.” The story “Flowers for Algernon,” by Daniel Keyes, is an example of science fiction that examines the impact of artificial intelligence. “The End of the Whole Mess,” by Steven King, is an example of science fiction that focuses on the fall of a mad scientist. The film “Gravity” is an example of a science fiction movie that explores the use of major technological advancement within space. In this paper I will assess the major themes portrayed in “Flowers for Algernon,“ “The End of the Whole Mess,” and the film, “Gravity.” Additionally, I will examine how these models of science fiction teach a major lesson about the imperfections of future scientific and technological advancements on society.
Although the comparisons are well hidden, both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share similar qualities. They both deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. A second similarity is the struggle of competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly, both struggle with normality, and the fact that it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.
Sci-Fi novels have been around for almost a century. Sci-Fi has the most potential of any genre to capture and explore the imagination of the world we know , or don’t know. Like any other genre Sci-Fi has tried to teach us lessons , or warn us of our arrogant choices as a whole civilization. But like all things, it changes with time. Sci-Fi writers adjust their styles accordingly based on current economic, political, or environmental problems around the world. The language in the writings change as well in an ongoing effort to keep up with the trends of popular culture.
