“Teacher seeks pupil. Must have an earnest desire to save the world. Apply in person.” (Quinn, 4). Both Ishmael and My Ishmael, two books written by Daniel Quinn, start the same way: an advertisement in a newspaper. This seemingly simple advertisement leads two curious people to Ishmael’s door seeking the answers to questions that they believe this teacher could have. These questions, however, vary quite a lot between the two characters because Daniel Quinn’s books concentrate on self-enlightenment, and the characters’ perspectives of the world are very different. These books focus on Ishmael’s students and their journeys, but these journeys aren’t of the physical nature; they are an “adventure of the mind and spirit” (Quinn, 1). Ishmael is a telepathic gorilla who has studied human nature and human societies, and he had his friend place an advertisement in the newspaper to attract pupils with an interest in helping the world. Alan Lomax, the main character of Ishmael, is the standard person Ishmael expects to respond to his ad: slightly pretentious and more importantly, an adult. Because the majority of both books is just Ishmael talking and having a conversations with his pupils, it means a significant change in how the book itself is constructed. Ishmael teaches Alan by just having regular intellectual conversations with him directly about the history and general topics. While he sometimes uses stories to explain portions of it, said stories are nonfiction. Ishmael teaches Julie using fictional stories of other species on other planets to get his points across in My Ishmael.
