What first comes to mind when you imagine colonial America? Do you possibly think of the first Thanksgiving or the events leading up to the American Revolution? The first Thanksgiving and American Revolution were both major events in English American history and due to English America’s large importance in American history, were therefore also significant events in the history of America. Yet, English America was not the only European nation to settle in America. Spain and France also established settlements and built societies in the New World. Though, while the English American, Spanish American, and French American societies had numerous similarities, there were various differences as well. English America had resemblances and variations from Spanish America and French America. The settlements of English America were primarily communities, farms, townships, and cities. As in English America, Spanish American settlements included towns, farms, and cities, but missions and forts too. Also, akin to English America, the culture of Spanish American mirrored the culture of Spain, though American culture influenced Spanish American culture over time. Spanish American culture was rich in the arts, with buildings constructed in European architecture styles, statues, paintings, and music. However, unlike the English and French kings, the Spanish king maintained more control over the government of the Spanish colonies. The Spanish king governed the colonies through a viceroy, the audiencia real, governors, and other officials lower in authority. Moreover, while in English America, settlers belonged to a number of different religions, Spanish America was Catholic and various missionaries established numerous missions in hopes of converting the Native Americans to the Catholic
