Cinderella vs Aschenputtel There are many versions of Cinderella, and according to Cinderella History, there are between 350 and 1500 different versions. Each version is different in some way, such as the plot or characters, yet similar too. In the Brothers Grimm version titled “Aschenputtel” and the Perrault version titled “Cinderella,” there are many differences and similarities. The differences have made society’s view of Cinderella different; between “Cinderella” and “Aschenputtel,” the differences are quite obvious, which makes each story unique. The most noticeable differences between Aschenputtel and Cinderella are the characters, the clothing, and the fate of the stepsisters. There are many differences on how Cinderella is helped by a character to get to the ball. The Disney version is very similar to “Cinderella”, which is the most common version known today. In Perrault’s version, Cinderella has a godmother who is a fairy that contrives for Cinderella to go to the ball. The godmother is the character who helps dress Cinderella and get her to the ball. In “Aschenputtel” it is said, “a little white bird always came on the tree, and if Cinderella expressed a wish, the bird threw down to her what she had wished for” (Grimm). Both the godmother and the white dove clothed her in gold and silver. A difference, however, is found in the type of slippers Cinderella wore, which changes the plots. The white dove gave her a pair of gold slippers, while the godmother gave her a pair of glass slippers. In “Aschenputtel,” it does not precisely say that she is given a pair of gold slippers until the statement, “The king’s son picked it up, and it was small and dainty, and all golden” (Perrault); this is referring to Cinderella leaving her slipper as she fled the palace.
