When the average person thinks about fighting or self defence their first image is of pugilistic combat. This punching and kicking, which is striking, is only half of hand to hand combat with its counterpart which is grappling. Grappling refers to using techniques to gain an advantageous position or to cause injury to an opponent. Striking is a direct attack with the attackers body. A simple way of looking at it is to compare wrestling to boxing because wrestling is a discipline that is primarily grappling and boxing which is primarily striking. Grappling is a better discipline to learn than striking disciplines because in fights grappling is unavoidable, leads to a variety of versatile ways to end a fight, and once a wrestling esque scramble occurs one must grapple instead of striking or risk losing control of the fight. Not all conflicts need to be resolved with maiming the other person with strikes. Grappling gives more ways to finish a fight where stickes end all fights the same. Knowing grappling can help one with the law if a fight breaks out. One could wrestling someone to the ground and pin them is more peaceful than striking them until they are unconscious. Grappling is about controlling another person, most fights can be avoided if two people are just moved away from each other. This is the reason most police and security officer practice a variety of armlocks and takedowns to control people without hurting them.
