Booker T. Washington and WEB Dubois were two very different civil rights and educational leaders who were very different. Their differences and similarities can be compared to that of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.

Their differences start with their backgrounds. Washington was born a slave in a South and experienced a different type of racism than Dubois. Washington lived through the sharecropping system, witnessed lynching and to had to deal with the growing popularity of the KKK. Dubois, however, grew up with free African American parents in the North in white neighborhood, where he experienced less radical hatred and racism. He studied in Europe was the first African American to receive a PhD from Harvard.
