Athena and ares often get confused with each other. This is mostly because the have two major things in common. They are both children of zeus, They are both gods of war.
Athena is the goddess of battle strategies, and wisdom ,and Ares is the god of warfare, battle and bloodshed. This however, is where the similarities stop.
Despite the countless moral and mental differences between these two gods of war there are several major things they have in common , and both were worshiped for similar reasons.The most important thing they have in common is that the are both representations of warfare and battle, and how the both see warfare in the lives of morals. In Greek mythology, Ares is a Greek god who demonstrates similar characteristics that Chris Kyle has. He is the god of war, and he demonstrates selflessness and bravery in many different Greek myths. In Greek mythology, Ares is known for his selflessness and bravery. Similarly, modern-day hero, Chris Kyle is also known for his selflessness and bravery. Although these two characters are so different, they have many characteristics in common.
Ares and Aglaulus had a girl named Alkippe. According to myths Poseidon's son Halirrhothius raped Alkippe or tried to rape her. This made Ares extremely angry and he struck down and killed Halirrhothius. “He also upset the harmony of Olympus when he was accused of killing Poseidon’s son Halirrhothius near a stream below the Athenian acropolis” (Cartwright). Ares was later tried in court for murder this was the first trial in history and it took place in Athens. The other Olympian gods thought that Ares did nothing wrong so he paid no penalty. This myth show how Ares has no regard for life and didn't care if he killed someone.
Sparta and Athens - Explain and Contrast Both Sparta and Athens were Greek city-states. Sparta was a strict military ruled city-state where the people established themselves as a military power early. However Athens was more of a political city-state that was more involved with their economical stature than their military forces. Still changes from the Persian wars would change the powers of the city-state and somewhat unite them.

Both are associated with powers and abilities to perform extraordinary things. Ares as a god of war and violence is depicted as a very fierce god. Modern societies have modeled their government organizational structure and military discipline practices from lessons learned of these ancient city-states. There is much is to be praised regarding Classical Greece for their courage, their progressive thinking and the birth of democracy. However, I think it is important to remember that in both cases, Athens and Sparta were able to sustain their lifestyle on the backs of countless slaves, non-citizens and women and that there is a darker and less romantic side to the past.

While Ares was really part of a religion, he also ties into mythology because the stories of the gods are exactly what they are described to be: stories. In Greek mythology, he is known as a rather unimportant character, as he didn’t actually narrate many stories (Hamsen 113). The ones he did play a lead role in were often the ones where he was defeated or bested by another character. He was often outdone in battle, despite his status as a war god. He maintained constant rivalries with many of the gods, particularly Athena, goddess of war and wisdom (Alys 152.) Because of his constant fighting, he was never a respected god; however, Mars, Ares’s Roman counterpart, was heavily favored by his followers (Jordan 191).

Symbols that identify with the goddess include the owl for wisdom and the olive branch for peace (Athena or Minerva… 1). Athena was a goddess of war who preferred peace to fighting (Lies 47). The deity was depicted in full wartime armor, including a helmet and spear. However, despite her rough accessories, Athena also showed off extreme femininity in her clothing as well as features (Buxton 79). Athena was Zeus’s favorite daughter. Zeus, the king of the gods, allowed her to dress in his Aegis (Lies 47). The Aegis was a breastplate made of goatskin that bore the image of a gorgon to instill panic in foes (Buxton 79). She was born fully-grown and already dressed in her full outfit, ready for war. Furthermore, Athena was the only Olympian not born of a mother. She sprang directly from her father, Zeus’s, head (Lies 47). She was different from the others of her kind, which may be why she was so honored so highly in early Greece.

What makes the depiction between Athena and Aphrodite interesting is the different ways they are portrayed even sharing the similarity of being born strictly from male only. Athena from the all-powerful king of the gods Zeus and Aphrodite from Ouronos. Though they were both born from man alone, the content of these births caused Athena to be expressed in a more dignified, respected, and superior way. Hesiod’s recount of the births of Athena and Aphrodite in his Theogony reveals the source of Athena’s superiority. According to the Theogony, Ouranos’ genitals are thrown into the sea where they mix with the sea foam to result in Aphrodite (Hesiod 180-192). Aphrodite is said to be called, by Hesiod, “Philommedes, fond of a man’s genitals” ( Hesiod, 200-201). In contrast, Hesiod writes that Athena is born from Zeus’ head (Hesiod 924) after Zeus consumes her mother Metis, the goddess whose name means wisdom, for fear of her giving birth to someone who was destined to be his match in wisdom (Hesiod 894-900).
In the poem, Iliad, Achilles and Hector both show relative heroism in their own different ways. Achilles may have been the more popular hero, but Hector had great heroism as well. Each of these characters possess their own different strengths and weaknesses. These two characters both have pride as being one of their main weaknesses. Hector seems as if he would suit best in the modern world, but there are a few different reasons as to why the ancients may have chose Achilles. Hector and Achilles both lost a lot by letting their pride get in the way of their heroism. Both of these characters were their country’s best warrior. Achilles and Hector have very different personalities, and very different ways of approaching situations.
