Bastille Day and Canada Day are both holidays that are important to the countries where they are celebrated. Bastille Day is celebrated because it marks the day that the French Revolution began and when revolutionaries attacked Bastille. Canada Day is celebrated because it marks the day that Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the province Canada became one nation; Canada. These holidays are very similar but are also very difference. They both celebrate the unification of a country. The French united to fight against the monarchy and the Canadians united to become one nation. Revolution is one word that summarizes complete change. To put the name of a country before the word revolution means complete change in that country's government. While the French and the American revolutions share some similarities, they differ in most areas involving the revolution. Enlightenment ideas would help shape politics, economics, and religion in the revolutionary nations. Although both found the importance of individual rights, they took different paths in establishing and operating their respective governments. After greatly contributing to the war, especially in the Battle of the Atlantic, Canada ended up having the 3rd largest navy and 4th largest air force. Now, for such a small nation of only around 11 to 12 million, this was a large military force. Since Canada had done so well in the war (already their second world war as a country) Canada started to grow further and further apart from Mother Britain. There was a feeling a greater sense of pride and a more nationalistic notion. Canadians everywhere no longer saw themselves as British, Scottish, or American, they were Canadian. Canada was now a respected country, and I might add, a pretty powerful one too.
We celebrate holidays like Victoria day and many people don’t even realize the reason why they don’t have to show up for work on this statutory holiday. Victoria day had begun in 1845 under the reign of Queen Victoria, it was really a celebration of her birthday. During her monarchy she had been the longest ruler to date and when she passed in 1901 the Canadian government officially recognized May 24 as a nation holiday called Victoria Day. During her time ruling people celebrated the day in many of the same ways we do today including camping, fireworks and parades, what really made this special though was the fact that it united Canada between the French and English Canadians. During this time monarchy separated Canadians from Americans and support for a monarchy meant protection of minority rights, so pledging allegiance to the crown through a holiday was a very rare common ground that both French and English citizens could enjoy. It is unfortunate that most people have grown accustomed to the holiday without taking the time to understand and appreciate the actual reason for the celebration. The American and the French revolutions had many similarities and differences. One similarity being is that they both wanted to escape the rule of their King. Second, they both started by an uprising of people against unfair taxation by the monarchy. The French peasants were not represented by the Parliament. It was mainly composed of middle and upper class people. Now, the American colonists were not represented in England because of their lack of presence. Both wanted to set up a Republic, which provided liberty and justice to all classes of citizens. Just like France, the American colonists were composed up mainly middle and lower class citizens.
