“I will honour Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year,” Charles Dickens. “A Christmas Carol” is a wonderful film and play created by author, Charles Dickens. This story takes place in London of the year 1843. “A Christmas Carol” both the movie and play have many similarities and differences from each story, which would include its setting, characters, conflict, climax, and resolution. The main character in the movie and play is Ebenezer Scrooge. In the movie, “A Christmas Carol,” the story starts off in London at Scrooge’s office. The conflict of this story begins with Scrooge being a lonely old man who doesn’t care about Christmas. Everyone will try to cheer him up, but Scrooge believes Christmas is a, “Bah Humbug!” (Dickens, 2). The climax happened a few moments after the beginning of the movie. The ghost of Jacob Marley appeared in Scrooge’s bedroom and announces,”you will be haunted by three spirits,” then Marley screams in horror confusing Scrooge.(Dickens, 9) The resolution changed Scrooge’s life and thoughts about Christmas. In the beginning of the play, Jacob Marley is the first to speak, but the movie started out differently and Scrooge was the first to talk. (Dickens, 1) The script in the play had Marley remove his head from his shoulders, but I noticed the movie had not included that part. When the second spirit arrived, he commanded Scrooge to touch his robe. The stage directions in the drama had detailed, {SCROOGE walks cautiously to PRESENT and touches his robe. When he does, lightning flashes, thunder claps, music plays. Blackout} (Dickens, 19) No lightning had flashed nor any thunder had clapped in the film. One last thing I noted in the film was that Adam had not appeared in the last scene. The play had Scrooge send Adam to go buy a giant turkey for Bob Cratchit, but the film had Scrooge send the turkey anonymously to Bob’s
