Benefits of Community Policing
Community policing is a form of maintaining law and order in a neighbourhood through cooperation between the community members and the police (Putt, 2010). Since its establishment, community development has had various advantages on communities. Firstly, community policing develops a close-knit relationship between the police and the communities which develops the trust of the community members towards the police (Bartkowiak-Théron, & Crehan, 2010). Secondly, community policing aids in reducing fear among community members who are guaranteed of security from their cooperation with the police. Firstly, community policing requires the establishment of a close relationship between the police and the members of the community (Terpstra, 2011). This may take a long time to establish which delays the process of peace promotion within a community. Secondly, community policing may not be effective due to lack of involvement among some members of the community. Mostly, in community policing, most individuals expect the homeowners to take part in community policing solely. This leads to lack of efficiency in the process as it takes all people to be involved in order to identify and recognize any possible threats to the community’ security (Terpstra, 2011). Thirdly, community policing may lead to embezzlement of the public funds. This is because some community members employed in the management of the community’s resources used in community policing may exploit these resources for their own personal gains (Terpstra, 2011).
