Empowerment can be defined as a meaningful shift in the experiences of power attained through interaction in the social world, and is built through iterative in which a person takes action towards personal meaningful goals; draws community support, skill, knowledge and self efficiency to move towards those goals. When people are empowered, they have greater influence on the way services are delivered politically and socially around them. They also participate fully in such processes. However, empowerment of people requires adequate training for staff and support mechanism for the people to participate. In this essay, emphasis would be placed on the role of Nurses and Midwifes in attending to this all important need for the society.
For any community to achieve her developmental objective there must be the need to empower her citizens adequately. Political and social empowerments are some of the many ways this could be done. This is so because they are very critical for sustainable development of every community. Cattaneo (2014). The primary consideration in assessing the feasibility of community empowerment is the willingness and ability of the people to engage with the process on offer. Adamson, (2013). When there are pre existing skills and abilities among the people to participate in empowerment program, they must be encouraged. To fully achieve a rounded empowerment, there would be the need to work towards a people in their totality not minding age, gender or culture.

Though a lot of emphasis were placed on the health sector via nurses and midwifes, but an ideal society comprises of other institution, government agencies, corporate organizations and individuals in respective fields of endeavors and even religious bodies. Everyone have a role to play to empower those around them who needs it in order to give the society a better political and social change. Never the less, nurses and midwifes can influence the health of people globally by empowering them through social justice, which has its integral parts as fairness, equity in the distribution of power, resources, efficiency, just institution, system structures, policies, rights, equity in human development, sustainability and above all healthy living standard. When all hands are on deck, the society will be a better place devoid of negative tendencies that breeds ills.
