In the story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut the author demonstrates a parallel between communism and the society that is in the story and provides his opinion on its principles. Satire on the events and politics of the cold war was a very similar theme in writing and culture during the times this story was written. Vonnegut’s take on it, is fairly negative on these communist ideals and shows how terrible a society in which these ideals were the rules would in fact be. Vonnegut displays his thoughts through his description of how the characters feel and what they think about their society and what it has made them. They were equal every which way.” Because of that introduction, someone analyzing the text can directly see the parallel between the story and communism, that all of society and all it’s people are to be equal and have the same chances in life. Following the introduction of the setting, a quote builds on this ideal and how it is enforced in a communistic society. It says(after Harrison Bergeron has taken over the show and has declared himself as emperor), “It was then that Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General, came into the studio with a double-barreled ten-gauge shotgun. She fired twice, and the Emperor and the Empress were dead before they hit the floor.” As the text states that the person in this situation who tried to defy the system and it’s equality was eradicated immediately due to him being a “threat to society”, a reader can find the parallel. It is simply an addition to the prior ideal on an economically and totally equal civilization that is shown in communism. And the ideals of communism and the story both require that any threat to breaking out of it’s equality and what the government has said is to be, should be instantly killed or otherwise taken care
