An auteur is a film director who carries a specific idea or symbol through each movie they make. Tim Burton is an excellent example of this. He shows many different themes in his films and there is always one of his trademark symbols of darkness or monsters. Tim Burton created the film 'Edward Scissorhands' with a very specific idea in mind and several themes that he wanted the viewers to see and recognise. Behind every mask is a story. This is a theme that Tim Burton commonly uses and is very apparent in this film. He uses his symbol of darkness and a monster-like creature and gives it a backstory to represent this theme clearly. He does this through 'flashbacks' or 'memories' of Edward's past of his 'father' the inventor. Tim Burton shows that even though someone might be strange and different, it doesn't mean that they don't have reason to be so, that they don't have feelings. Many of Tim Burtons film feature a lonely and isolated creature/person, trapped in their own thoughts or beliefs. He uses Edwards isolation and loneliness to represent him to say that, "Years of isolation make it impossible for him to judge right from wrong.". Tim Burton strongly carries this theme to his audience in Edward Scissorhands. Tim Burton conveys that loneliness and isolation are very real problems and it can exist in anyone, good or bad, nice or rude. He uses the facial expressions of Edward to portray this. Edward is first seen as sad, never smiling and always confused and apart from others but soon he is smiling and joining everyone else, learning new things constantly. Tim Burton has always known that many people are isolated and lonely and he himself has experienced it. With this, he strived to let the audience know how strongly it can affect and shape a person.
