Columbus: The Columbus Day

In every history course, you are taught that Columbus was the one who founded the Americas, the hero. Now that you have researched more about Columbus through the years, is he really the superb person they characterize him as? Columbus could be either portrayed as a hero by replenishing culture or as a villain by killing many innocent lives. It is quite obvious that his evil actions outweigh his few accomplishments. It is “politically correct” that there is no cause for celebration. Citizens argue that this holiday preserves the Western Civilization. The correct view is that Columbus did not discover America because people have been settling there for thousands of years before. government. To meet the standards of a holiday it must be a celebration of commemoration of someone or something. Columbus Day did not become a federal holiday until 1937. Essentially, we are not one same religion so holidays are not religious based but morally decided. Some government offices remain closed on this day because it is a federal holiday. Columbus Day may be a public holiday yet some businesses and schools decide to remain open. In Latin countries, they celebrate The Day of The Race which is a national holiday honoring the origin of our population. Holidays are not taken off unless widely observed by man because who would not want to earn extra money or get out of school earlier in the year. Holidays were constructed by our nation’s history including the many great events and people in it. Holidays were meant to instill civic pride, pride in your city, to unite everyone together to ensure nobody was excluded. Holidays are meant to recognize the struggles and achievements of our society. Some people interpret situations differently. For example, some people look at Columbus Day as a day to mourn because they are upset with the past. In other instances, others rejoice because they are glad the past is moved on and over with so better things can happen. Everyone has different morals towards this idea because one thing is not going to satisfy all. A failure could be an achievement to one and vice versa.
