In 1974 a group of physicians from the Columbia Orthopaedic Group joined with other physicians, from around Columbia to build Columbia Regional Hospital. For the next 36 years the hospital serviced the community, patients and their families. In 2010, Columbia Regional Hospital changed their name to Women’s and Children’s hospital, and since then have commented to serving women, children, and their families.

This past year the Women’s and Children’s hospital served 250,000 patients, many of which are children. For many children hospitals are a terrifying place, and in their hardships that they suffer while being patients at the hospital, which is where FBLA comes in. The Centralia FBLA collected these supplies for “Operation Smile Supplies” because of request from the hospital and based o a few statistics about healing. The coloring book and coloring supplies, play into art therapy. Art therapy has been proven to reduce stress, and be a coping skill. Art therapy is nothing but a benefit for the children. Stuffed animals are so children can have a friend in the hospital with them. Children can find comfort in the stuffed animal, during the strenuous testing that can be terrifying. Toys were collect because every child needs toys to play with even in times of struggle to take their mind off things, and be a child again, instead of being a patient. The toy harmonics/recorders were collected, so that the child to be a musician, through music therapy. Music therapy has been proven to combat stress and anxiety, boost mood, provide emotional support, and be a coping skill. Music therapy has even been proven to help patients heal faster, than those who do not experience music therapy. The harmonics/recorders will be beneficial to the children’s healing. As for the socks in the Smile Supplies, every child needs a good pair of socks for when their sick, to keep their toezies warms. Plus sometimes in the rush of packing for the hospital a parent forgets to pack socks, and not having socks for a week plus, is a nightmare. These socks will be just the thing for the children. Lastly collected through “Operation Smile Supplies” were journals, so the kids could record their thoughts and feelings, or just write for fun. Journaling has been proven to relieve stress, which is good for the children. With these “Operation Smile Supplies” we had hoped to bring a smile to the children's faces, and the Centralia FBLA is proud to say when the children received the “Operation Smile
